Another wierd C&G level 2 exam question

OK, I think there are two right answers here... Again, nothnig in the actual course notes on this... You have to pick one, no option to write an essay on how they are all prone to issues after x years... I'd argue that an ASHP and Solar Thermal have similar maintenance requirements. Only...

Integrated pump in a system boiler. Any reason for it?

In the system boiler I have, there's an integrated circulation pump. Just wondering what benefit this has over and external pump or if there's a specific reason for one needing to be integrated due to being a pressurised non-vented system? Does it just make installation easier?

System boiler on a vented tank?

Just out of curiosity, I assume a system boiler has to work with an unvented system and a system boiler cannot be put into a vented system? (due to the lack of pressure)

Rads taking ages to warm. CH pump only runs when boiler is heating.

We have an old Potterton Profile 80e. Now that the cold nights have started, I've just set the programmer to run the CH. I've just noticed that the CH pump stops when the boiler cycles to off. Rads take forever to warm up! The selector switch in the boiler is set to Fully Pumped, so the pump...

    Undercloaking. Some questions.

Putting new undercloaking back after replacing sofits. The undercloak boards are butted and not overlapped right? The top of the fascia board is about 30mm above the top of the rafter, so the last bit of undercloak needs to kick up and rest on top of the fascia, right? Do I just fill the gap...

Bristan 1924 Shower valve. Temp tap is hard to turn down.

I've serviced the o-rings on the main cartridge to stop a dripping shower head but the temp control tap is still almost impossible to set to max cold. The end stop is set correctly, the tap is just really hard to move. It moves in very slight increments. The machanical tap moves fine. Is this...

Best tape for installing double glazed units into Accoya frames

Seems to be three types of tape, PVC foam, EPDM and Butyl. Is there a prefered type for securing doudle glazed units into Accoya wood frames? (Accoya can have nasty effects on things due to the acid in it)

uponor ufh manifold leak at flow meter

We had a small weep on the flow meter side of an Uponor underfloor heating manifold. When I tried adjusting the flow, the weep turned into a flood! I shut down the pump and isolated the CH from the UFH and tried to remove the flow meter. It is the older black plastic meter with the yellow...

    dimmer terminals

I just bought an LAP dimmer. The dimmer has 3 terminals, L and two dimmer outputs? (wavy line with arrow through, numbered 1 and 2). I assume this is for adding a second on/off switch elsewhere if required for 2 way operation? I assume for a simple single dimmer with no additional switches...

Cavity trays and flashing on a flat roof abutment

I have a flat roof that abuts a vertical wall. I installed 'refurbishment' type cavity trays which are the type with no lead attached, just a clip that keeps the spacing while the motar goes off. The clips are then removed and the lead flashing goes in under the lip of the tray. So my...

Warm flat roof with EPDM. Insulation options?

I have seen at least three options for building up a warm flat roof with EPDM. The composite roof deck type boards have to have additional ply/osb on top if using EPDM. I have also seen diagrams showing an additional overlay board between the PIR foam board and the EPDM. So here are the...

    U-value of wood?

I'm looking to build an upstand for a roof lantern. It will be about 300mm tall. I was going to just use joists and construct a solid 'wall' all the way around the lantern opening rather than an open trussed structure. Then I thought about possible cold bridge issues so i started looking...

ducting through a new slab for existing air bricks

I'm laying a slab which butts up against two walls of our house. The existing walls form an internal corner and the new slab extends out from there. There are 4 air bricks in the original external walls so these need ducting through the slab to retain ventilation. Three of the existing air...

    kinetico 2020. is it working?

We have a kinetico 2020 water softner and although we get good lather and have a clean kettle etc we still get some form of build up on shower doors and tiles in the bathroom. It's gradual and if left long enough is really hard to shift. Vikal won't touch it. I have tested the soft water and...

    Lowering upper floor in garage

I have a two story garage which was originally a coach house. It has solid brick walls. The upstairs was a hay loft. I'd like to lower the joists that form the upper floor so that there is more headroom upstairs. Currently the ground floor is over 3 meters high, I'd like to lower the...
