    Type of boarding for trailer?

I need to repair / replace the boarding on my car trailer. Is it ok to use OSB board or should it be 12mm marine Ply, as it currently is? The former I assume being cheaper.

    Replace external wooden sill

Had scaffolding erected for a roof repair which has finally provided me the opportunity to inspect the wooden window sills. Sadly, they're not in a good state. Pretty badly rotten and soaked. My feeling is that replacement is the best / only option. Would these wooden sills be extending right...

    Which sim is which?

I get really poor signal from my mobile provider so have purchased a second sim for data use. Having inserted it, the disparity is clear, see pic. The trouble is, which signal-strength bar relates to which sim? I can only assume that as it was poor before, the good one is the new one.

Why has my thread been deleted?

I posted this morning. I received some replies which were useful. I did not see anything that could be considered controversial. However, my whole thread now appears to have been deleted. Why?? I did put a request to the admin to delete just one of my posts within the thread, where I had...

    Dodgy number plates?

Bought a 2nd hand car, private sale. Discovered a set of plates, different number, in the back. Did a check on the number and comes back as not surprisingly, an identical vehicle, still taxed, MOTed and insured. Also, a full vehicle check shows it as NOT stolen or scrapped etc. What's the score...

Repair needed to parapet / box gutter

I have a split in the lead (?) of my parapet box gutter. It has been there for years it would seem as the board below has swollen, opening-up the gap in the split. Various attempts at repair have been made but none really successful. One chap stuck fibreglass and resin over it which came adrift...

    Cracking grout

Hi, The grout around a couple of the tiles in my shower has started to crack. The one as in the photo, is particularly bad and I am concerned about water ingress damaging the ply behind and ending up forcing the tiles off completely. Yes, I know that the silicone along the bottom is rough and...

    An alternative to a lift?

Has anyone any ingenious, thinking-out-of-the-box ideas for an alternative to a car lift? We don't have access to a pit nor decent high-level ramps. We're replacing gearbox, or rather rear-engine work, on a rear-wheel drive BMW and normal height axle-stands don't give enough clearance. We had...

    Toilet backing up

Toilet backs up to almost rim level when flushed, sits there for a short while and then flows away with a 'clonk' type noise. Particularly problematic in the morning after a night's-worth of loo paper and the occasional no.2 having sat in the pan all night. Not really an issue with just no.1s...

    Import duties on Ebay purchase

Purchased a car part on Ebay (or rather my son did) which came from Poland. Item arrived followed a week later by a FedEx invoice asking for an extra £80 odd. What the heck!? It turns out that in the small print under a separate tab of the advert, that buyer is responsible for import taxes. He...

    What could have caused this?

These are the large, 500 x 1.5m panes in our conservatory. All of them are the same. They were like this when we moved in 10yrs ago, although they have gotten slightly worse over the years. They obviously shouldn't be like this. I'm just wondering what would have caused it? Is it over-heating...

Any experience in working with steel?

Not sure if this is the correct thread? My son is building a car trailer, using the rolling chassis from a caravan. He's CADed it all up and tbh it's looking pretty good. I'm giving it a sense check but my knowledge is limited. I'm looking for some advice on steel strengths, max hole sizes and...

    Leaky felt roof

I have a very minor leak / seepage in a flat roof extension. It is board and felted and then chippings above. The edge of the roof has lead flashing tucked into the brickwork where it meets the adjoining property. I've removed all of the chippings, given it a good wash over and left to dry. It...

    BMW 1 series timing chain

Can I replace the timing chain on on 1 series with engine in situ? Anyone done this? I recognise it'd be easier with engine out of course. I do have access to a vehicle lift so, whilst still fidly, it does remove some of the struggle. Please, no suggestions of "take it to a garage". This is a...

    Combi boiler not holding pressure

Baxi boiler, just 2yrs old, won't hold any pressure. Put it up to pressure; have a shower and by the time I'm finished it is back down into the red. No obvs leaks anywhere. Any ideas what's going wrong? It's apparently under 10 yr warranty. Would this be a conversation direct to Baxi or should...

    Valley repair cost?

I've been quoted £2.3k to over-board a valley (behind parapet wall) currently lead / fibreglass, with ply and cover with Firestone rubber over the valley and up the parapet walls. Inc, removing / replacing coping stones. Valley is approx 500mm wide and in total, 9m length . Parapet wall is...

    Wago connector query

On another thread someone has suggested that I use Wago connectors instead of choc blocks. These are new to me but I agree, look good. Before I purchase can someone explain to me how they are supposed to work? Googling it I seem to get both options: 1. putting all wires of the same pole type...

    Connector inside of light fitting?

I've just purchased a couple of light fittings, direct from China. They come completely dis-assembled in a couple of small cardboard boxes and can pretty easily be put together. However, there appears to be the wire-connectors missing that go inside of the fitting, connecting the six arms to the...

    Is this subsidence?

Even before this latest, very dry summer my parent's house showed signs of cracks. It is originally a late 1800s property with an extension built on the side in the early '60s. When I was a youngster there until the early 80s, there was a separation crack between the old and the new. In fact at...
