No cavity insulation. Any comeback from NHBC?

I recently discovered that I have no cavity insulation, having removed the flue from a gas fire that I removed. Looking into the cavity, there is no insulation. The house was finished in 2001 and I presumed the NHBC warranty/guarantee would have expired. Speaking to a colleague who was in the...

    Cavity insulation

My house was built in 2001 by Countryside, but they didn't install any cavity insulation. Having removed a flue cover there is a void and not a scratch of insulation. I'm guessing there is no come back from Countryside. The cavity is 45mm, so what's the best filling? Thanks in advance for any...

    The wrong cable?

Hi all I have wired up a frame with 3x 4w led lamps, using 0.75mm 3 core flex. Each has a 2m run from a junction box. However, when I came to strip the ends for the lamp fitting, the cable is 0.5mm. Guy in the shop gave me the wrong cable. Is 0.5mm ok? or should I strip out and replace? The...

    Led lighting

Hi. I have replaced a halogen ceiling lamp with a led one. The switch is a standard dimmer. When turned on the lamp glows but is dim and the dimmer has no effect. Will a led dimmer solve the problem? In that, the lamp glows brighter as well as dimming. Thanks for any advice.

    Cracked Asbestos soffits

Hi. I have some concerns regarding cracked and crazed soffit boards. I am sure they are some form of asbestos, presuming ACB as they are about 5mm thick and very hard. However, as they are crazed and cracked does this pose a danger? The house is council owned, built early to mid 1960s. I will...

Currently I have 4"x2" joists with 18" centres, and filled with 4" of insulation. There are two brick walls directly underneath the loft that the loft floor rests on. Longest unsupported span is 3m. I wish to board the loft for light storage only but add some extra insulation. Plan: Lay 50mm...

    Qualifications to fit a boiler

Hi All. In order to replace a heat only boiler with a combi boiler, would a qualified electrician be required? Or can a plumber with only plumbing qualifications carry out the task? Obviously there is a lot to consider such as boiler supply, changing thermostats, removing and making safe...

    New Worcester Boiler fitted

Is it a requirement to clean the heating system before fitting a new Worcester Bosch boiler to meet the warranty policy? If so, what should be done? Power or chemical clean? How long to clean? I think my installer did not carry this out. How does one check it's been done?

Hi. I'm fitting extra kitchen units and need to remove a 1.3m central-heated radiator. The kitchen is 34 cubic meters. Hence, I am tempted by the Smiths SS5 heater. Are they a good option, or should I look at a different options? If the latter, which one? I do have space for a tall radiator...

Storm damage and not covered by insurance

Hi. I have had a building inspector visit my home to assess the damage to my roof after last week's storm. Two roof tiles came off and one landed on my car! Apparently I am not covered by my insurance even to have the roof repaired. The inspector said the construction of the roof is not of...
