Locked escape window - key behind 'break glass'

Is it permissable to lock an escape window and put the key behind a 'break glass' for key to escape?

Bedroom window in extension overlooking garden.

I've planned an extension and I'm very happy with it. I spoke to the council today at the pre-application advice centre and they said all seems fine except it is unlikely I'd get permission for a bedroom with a frosted glass window and being nearly 20m from a neighbour it would have to be. The...

    Drill/bore large deep hole.

I have a post in the garden, 500mm high and 60mm diameter. I'd like to drill a matching hole in the bottom of a christmas tree so I can put it on the post. What is the best way to drill the hole? I figured a centre hole that a larger bit could follow would be best but there is little choice...

Soldering in hard to reach places

Is there such a thing that you can clip on a hard to reach joint, then heat it and the heat will conduct into to the joint for soldering (or removal) ? I want to unsolder the elbows of these two pipes. The pipes come from the wall cavity about 1" away which has insulation from the 1980s in it...

    Fitting water hammer arrester.

My 3 bar water tank is upstairs and my shower and tap are about 20 metres of 15mm copper pipe away from it. The shower seals were made for 1 bar maximum but they seem to cope fine with 3 bar but just can't manage the water hammer effect from the sink tap turning off quickly. Rather than...

    Plumbing - proper balancing/bypass

I installed a heat exchanger for my small swimming pool, however I have to balancing incorrect. Whilst it does work it is very sensitive. A - 1.5" input from 400W pool pump through normal central heating pump valve, restricted flow into 28mm copper (couldn't get full bore from screwfix). B -...

Shortest conversion 1.5" bsp to 22mm

I have a 1.5" female BSP connection on the boiler which I want to connect a 22mm pipe to. What is the shortest way of doing this? RS have nearly what I want but only up to 1" https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/brass-copper-compression-fittings/4320342/

Header tank feed - on flow or return?

I'm trying to confirm where the feed from the header tank should be. It seems unanimous that the 'escape pipe' for air should be close to the output from the boiler. It is about 50/50 whether the cold feed/expansion goes just after this and before the pump or somewhere on the return, i.e. just...

Plumbing diagram for Oil fired Pool Heater.

I'm installing an old oil fired boiler to heat the kids' pool. This is my starting diagram and I'd like a bit of input please. I've not done this before and some things are counter-intuitive so I'm checking. It is outside (in a shed) so I'll have to have anti-freeze of some kind in the system...

Building a small shed - with bricks on edge.

I want a small shed, about 4 feet high and 3foot wide - the width of the paving slab base. What I want to put in it doesn't quite fit unless I put the bricks on their edge, i.e. with the frog facing inside the shed. Is there any real problem with this? It only has to last a few years but is...

Can someone explain Return Temps to me?

I've always just assumed that the colder the return to the boiler the more efficient the boiler would be (i.e. greater differential so heat transfer through manifold is faster). But I've come across direct evidence to the contrary (e.g. boiler recommends minimum 60 degree return, 'hearth' temp...

Not sure of building reg's regarding fire ...

I'm working out ideas for an extension to my 3 bed semi. Trying to see what the alternatives are and how I can get the most for my money. My ideal option is a bit pricey but by far the best, however I'm not sure it fits with fire regulations. I plan on having 3 stories but I'm not certain if...

Does 3-way valve orientation make a difference?

My valve is the opposite way around to most diagrams with A feeding the hot water and B feeding the central heating. The valve actuator is the right way around so I figure it makes no difference but just checking first.

    Loose wire behind Honeywell ST9400C

My heating is on the blink, hot water is ok and central heating is ok but both together causes Honeywell unit to flick off and on repeatedly. I took the units of (with the intention of fitting a Hive unit recently on offer at Screwfix) but it looks like the problem is probably just a loose...

What would cause the burning on this plug?

In the room in the loft an oil filled radiator tripped out the RCD and had this burn mark on the plug. There is no damage elsewhere and the socket appears fine and functions as normal. Any ideas what the cause is from the burn mark? Is it the radiator, the plug or the socket or something else?

I want to use some triple sockets but can't find any 3way Appleby dry lining boxes. Is there such a thing or do I have to use a metal pattress box?

    Where to get gang nails.

I'm considering laying a floating wooden floor using standard floorboards. Instead of nailing them down I was thinking it may be possible to nail boards together using gang nails/strips on the underside but they seem quite hard to find? Is there a decent supplier for largeish quantities...

    Upturned parquet floor

Is it possible to lay reclaimed parquet blocks upside down and then sand/plane them to a quality finish? I'm not sure if the 'tar' would clog up the sander or if the underside of the blocks are the same quality of finish.

    Balancing radiators.

I've just added 3 radiators to my system, about 12000 BTU total using about 40m of copper pipe. When balancing the existing radiators, firstly I found that they were all fully open but then I found that a mere quarter turn from closed heats them up adequately (don't have thermometer, just...

    Wiring floodlight into ring circuit

I currently have a switch connected to the lighting circuit (in garage) which passes the wire through the wall to the other side (left hand diagram). I want to move this flood lamp onto the 30A ring circuit and install a plug socket as the right hand diagram. The ring comes into the light...
