    Poor velux fitting

Hi all. I am writing this on behalf of my inlaws. They are having an extension built. Windows, electrics, floor and insulation are in but the Velux windows seem to be leaking. Builder has had a look but quite honestly we don't trust him. He will never admit any error, can never get hold of him...

    Time to fit internal doors..

OK, so I have got someone to fit 5 x internal 44mm thick oak veneer doors. I have supplied doors and door furniture. Three hindges on each and a privacy lock for a bathroom on one door and a deadbolt keyed lock for a garage door. They quoted 57 for the standard doors and 62 for the doors with...

    Supporting wall design liability

OK. So I am having issues with a supporting wall I have built as part of my extension. Let me start from the beginning.. I receive plans a year ago and start sourcing suppliers etc. Notice that the main supporting wall is specified as being a 150mm dense concrete block wall. None of the...

    Large format tiling

Hi, I have 40m2 of extension joined onto about 30m2 of the existing house that I want to tile with somthing like 60x60 tiles. Both parts have underfloor heating and the extension was screeded with sand and cement about 4 weeks ago now. The whole floor is level over the 12meters but wouldn't...

Central heating wiring with ufh plus rads

Hi all, I'm not quite sure what the neatest, simplest solution to my central heating wiring. I have 4 zones. Two radiator zones, a hot water and an underfloor heating zone. My understanding is that when the radiator zones are turned on, the ufh pump should not come on so should be isolated...

    Existing base vs new extension

Hi all, I have built a 40m2 extension with a beam and block floor, 100mm insulation, and layed some ufh pipes. Will be sand and cement screeding this week. We will be bringing the screed up to the two rooms we have knocked through into. I think we are going to want 600x600 tiles layed in the...

    Floor screed qty/mix

I have an area of 10.8m x 3.6m x 80mm which I work out to be 3.11m3 of floor screed. Based on the fact that 15 bags of cement to 1m3 sharp sand to create 0.9m3 of screed I have worked out I need about 51 bags of cement and 5.2 tonnes of sand. Does this sound right to anyone in the know? Thanks

    Floor probe with wet ufh

I'm trying to decide on some heating controls. I've currently got Hive but will be adding underfloor heating to the extension and will be adding an extra zone to split upstairs and downstairs. So that will be three zones. I could just buy two more hive units and that would work but hive don't...

Padstone cast in place concrete mix

I want to cast one of my padstones in place as I can't get the right size. Searched a fair bit and a strong 3:1 mix seems the be what I need but some have mentioned using a smaller aggigrate like 10mm rather than the usual 20mm. Does anyone have any opinions on this?

    Poor tradesman

What is it with trades and being so bloody unreliable. My builder was brilliant during lockdown as I had materials for him. So I've since reccomend him to the in laws and he's a month late starting but he just isn't letting them know his timescales, never replies to texts or phone calls and has...

    Knock through

Hey all, I am just planning my knock through. I have a nearly 7 meter wall to come out at the back of my house. There will be 4 beams - two large ones @ 5.3 meters long. One of which will support the inside leaf and one the outside leaf. The inside one sits under the 1st floor joists which...

    Passing wires through back box

I presume that it's acceptable to pass a 2.5mm T&E through a back box? The wires will run in and out of this socket over to another socket and then back the way they came so makes sense to run through the box. Thanks

    Only one lighting circuit..

    Supporting pier size/construction

Hey all. I need to construct a pier to take one end of two beams which will span about 5 meters. The drawing states to create a 360 x 360 x 210 fletton brick pier. Currently where this is to be created there are two joining walls. One 250mm with 50mm cavity and one 100mm wall. I will have to...

    Hardwired smoke alarm

Hey all, I have a kitchen extension and am planning the wiring. Is a hardwired smoke alarm required? I have wireless battery operated fireangle alarms currently which won't link with a hardwired version?

    Cooker supply

Hi all, just planning the wiring for my kitchen extension. The induction hob will be 7.2kw and will have two single 3.3kw ovens so a total of 13.8kw. I beleive anything under 15kw can be on a 6mm wire or will it need to be 10mm? The trip is also a B32. The appliances will be about 9 meters away...

    Lights looped on switch

Just had a look at a few of my lights on my 1970s house and they are all wired in with the loops at the switch rather than the light. I want to extend the circuit for my extension. Should I continue to loop in at switch or loop all at lights. I was going to look all new ones at lights.

    Wires in insulation

What is standard proactive for fitting wires in the insulation of a vaulted ceiling or flat roof for that matter. So when you have 100+ of celotex between rafters and then 50mm below then plasterboard. Where do you stick your lighting wires and then if you have some fire rated downlights do you...
