    Which plaster to use?

Looking to prep the walls for the plasterer to skim everything but not sure which plaster to use as an undercoat above the window. Seems the area has a mixture of wood and breeze blocks and is about 6mm deep, so which plaster do I use and should I use PVA first? Any help would be appreciated, Rob

    Understand the planning process.

I was just about to reply with the same as down here in the SE, you’d be lucky to have them open your letter, let alone reply to it for £50 :-)

    Understand the planning process.

Didn’t realise Woody and Wessex had such a colourful past. I’ll be more careful in the future :-)

    Understand the planning process.

I had an idea this might have been the case with the council, and reading your reply has helped me understand the process and what is going on with them. Your help on clarify this has been very much appreciated. Thank you

    Understand the planning process.

I can fully understand your frustration if this is something you know well. Unfortunately, I’m not so knowledgeable and to me it’s a confusing process. The building isn't going to be cheap to do so I need to know I’m not going to get a letter from the council demanding I rip it down because I...

    Understand the planning process.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have been careful enough to ensure the loft conversion will meet all the criteria. My only concern was them originally refusing planning permission because the hip to gable would spoil the symmetry of the nearby semi detached properties. Can they not still do...

    Understand the planning process.

Some years ago I applied for planning permission for a hip to gable with a dormer, plus the demolition and rebuilding of a single storey extension. The council refused permission on the grounds the hip to gable would spoil the symmetry of the nearby semi detached properties. Because of this I...

Hip to gable over single storey side extension.

This is what I thought, so thanks for the clarification. I know council would not grant permission should planning application for hip to gable be put forward. As such I’ll stick to proposed elevation 1 as it comes under PD, and ensure architect keeps area to below 50m³ when adding rear dormer...

Hip to gable over single storey side extension.

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the PD rules when it comes to building a hip to gable loft conversion over our single storey side extension. Someone told me we cannot have the hip to gable beyond the original walls. Is this the case? To give an idea of what I’m talking about I've...

Groundbeams for the DIYer or not?

Yes, the piling company will be doing everything involved in the construction of the pile. One of the problems is access which is not ideal given we only have a 6ft wide access to the rear of the property. Not sure about a crane either as from front road to rear of property when materials need...

Groundbeams for the DIYer or not?

That is a name which sounds familiar to me. I will look them up and see what they offer. All I know is the engineer (who was recommended by the council inspectors) has advised us that an augered pile is required.

Groundbeams for the DIYer or not?

Hi everyone, Had the council around before Christmas saying because our neighbour has trees close to our boundary we needed piling for our replacement extension. So we got a company to do a soil report and had drawings done to show the piling positions etc. Like most people, I had a budget for...

    Replacing chimney flue

Hi Tony, Thought I would upload a few pictures of the chimney in question. It’s on a semi detached bungalow which was built around 1950s. So by the sounds of it I cannot remove the chimney stack from inside the loft which is what I needed to do to be able to install the stairs against the...

    Replacing chimney flue

Just a quick question. We need to install some stairs against a party wall but was told we’d need to remove the chimney stack to allow room for this. I spoke to my neighbour about needed to remove it and he was fine about it. However, he said he still uses a gas fire in the fireplace which...

    Cannot understand plans

Architect says building reg plans are separate and those are what he is working on at the moment. I was just expecting these plans to show those locations given they specify the beans needed. So does this mean the building reg plans will have more details about joists and the like? Just to say...

    Cannot understand plans

I’m in need of understanding the plans drawn up by my architect for a hip to gable loft conversion. Unfortunately my architect isn’t the most helpful person and trying to get a direct response is near impossible. My main concern revolves around what is going to support the new floor joists and...

    Cladding a brick structure.

Yes it does currently suffer from penetrating damp which is mostly caused by my neighbour having earth up against the wall which is about a foot above the damp course. Spoke to him today and been told it’s going to be sorted. I was thinking of a 30-35mm overlap so this goes well with what you...
