Rad TRV seems to have only 2 settings - on or off

My bedroom rad currently has a [bi-directional] valve on the return side. The TRV effectively has 2 settings - on full or [set to 1] off. I've checked the pin isn't sticking and tried a different TRV head with no difference. Any idea what the problem is? Would swapping the rad feed pipes over...

Why no E27 Pendant fittings in UK?

Hi I've been looking everywhere for E27 pendant fittings with little luck. Currently having to use bayonet to E27 convertors for my Ikea LED cool bulbs, but that makes them too long for certain shades. Only place I can find them for sale is in US. Anyone know why?

    22mm to 1/2" tap valve flexi-hose?

Hello I've been looking everywhere for the flexi-hose in the title, but it doesn't seem to exist? My old bath has 22mm cold and 15mm hot pipes. My new bath has a mixer tap with 1/2" legs. Is the only alternative to fit a 22mm - 15mm reducer on the the cold, then use a 15mm - 1/2" valve...

    1/2 in tapered fitting

Hi I am trying to find a 15mm to 1/2" tap fitting compression elbow. The only one I could find in the local shed has a 1/2' tapered end. What is the tapered end for? Will this do the job with PTFE on the threads? Thanks for any help nigel

    Polyplumb or Speedfit?

What's the difference between these 2 systems? I'm planning to renovate bathroom, replacing shower bath and sink, including running hot & cold pipes in wall for recessed shower valve and semi-ped washbasin. So which of these two would be best for me? Ta for any tips. :)

    bath waste pipe hopper overflowing

Hello Looking at other houses in my area, it seems that there should be a hopper below my bath, sink and shower waste pipe, where it exits the outside wall. The previous owner had instead connected this 40mm pipe to a standard down pipe, using silicon seal to fill the mismatch in pipe size. The...

    location of fused spur/fan isolator

I understand that a shower light/fan must be fitted with an isolator - a double pole fused spur. Could this be sited in the loft - which has a fitted ladder and light - or does it have to be more accessible? Putting it in the loft would save the electrician from having to chase and fit a spur in...

    touching up matt walls

Hi I painted all the downstairs walls about 3 years ago with Dulux Hessian Matt. I made a right pig's ear of it as well, by going back over patches while wet etc. Now I need to patch up some bits where there are dirty marks that won't wipe off, or holes for pictures I have filled. Is...

new vaillant 831 -pressure gauge in red

I had a new ecotec plus 831 boiler fitted last week. Heating and hot water are working fine, but I noticed the pressure gauge needle was a bit into the red last night. It's been off all day and now it's back on the needle is in the red again. Display is flashing between 60 degrees C and 3.0...

new boiler powered via plug in socket ok?

Finally had my new boiler fitted - vaillant ecotec plus 831 - and very nice it is too :) Installer put a plug on mains lead and plugged it into a double switched socket underneath, same as the old boiler had. Reading the installation instructions, Vaillant say it should be plugged into a...

Worcester Bosch 30Si or Vaillant 831?

What do you reckon is the better of these for a 3 bed 10 rad [5 small ones] EOT house with one bath, 2 sinks and good insulation. Going for more than 24KW as I want the bath to fill quicker!

    15mm or 22mm gas pipe to combi-boiler?

I have had 3 estimates for replacing my old combi-boiler with either the Vaillant ecotec plus 824 or 831. All of the fitters said that I would need a new 22mm gas feed from the meter, as the 15mm currently installed was not sufficient. Looking through the Vaillant eco-tec range leaflet on...

CH pipes only 15mm from boiler

I'm going to have my combi boiler replaced, but fitters who have looked say current 15mm pipes on CH flow and return are too small. One suggested replacing about 1m up and 1m down [from the boiler] with 22mm to help heat travel away from boiler. Do you think this would make a difference? Does it...

heating only works when I run the [cold] hot water

Well I mentioned on another thread that our Gem combi boiler had packed up. The hot water stopped working but the CH was ok. Then BG engineer came and replaced a divertor valve, which hasn't fixed the problem. So he then diagnosed it as a faulty heat exchanger, which can't be replaced. Then we...

    What size combi boiler?

My Gem combi boiler has died and I can't decide whether to ask for Vaillant EcoTEC 824 or 831 replacement. Old boiler gave DHW max 26.4 Kwh. 824 = 23 max Kwh 831 = 31 max Kwh Thing is, the HW flow was ok but not great with old boiler, but I never needed to set the temp dial above half way...

    electric shower at half strength

Hi I have a Gainsborough 10.5KW electric shower fitted, with a 45A isolator switch in the hallway outside the bathroom, and a 300ma RCD in the consumer unit. About a month ago, the RCD tripped while I was in the shower. My wife reset the RCD and the shower came back on, and has worked since...

    drain sealed system

Hi I have a combi boiler sealed CH system, supplying 10 radiators. I previously fitted a trv to a lounge radiator using a pipe freeze kit. I now want to fit trvs to 8 other radiators, leaving the bathroom one as it is [permanently on for drying towels]. I have located the filling loop and...

what is waxy paper stuff behind roof tiles?

My roof has this waxy paper stuff covering the tile backs, fixed between rafters, which seems to keep the draughts out. A lot of it is torn or falling apart, and I want to get some more to replace it. What is it called and where can I get it? Thanks for any help.

    removing cold water tank?

My home has a combi boiler, and still has a cold water tank installed in the loft, which supplies the toilet flush and cold taps on bath and washbasin. I want to take the tank out, partly because it makes a dripping noise for ages after flushing the toilet or running a tap, and also to make the...
