    Bannister, post and spindles

Hi, I have an old Victorian terraced house and have stripped the bannisters, post and spindles back to bare wood. It is very old wood, previously filled and painted many times, a lot of wear and some splits and holes that were previously filled with white filler, as well as small bits of old...

    Dual 230v shaver socket outlet

Seen similar issues here but nothing conclusively. My problem is that I am trying to split an existing 2 pronged wall mounted shaver socket in to two. This so to accommodate permanent things plugged in, namely a rechargeable toothbrush and shaver. Does such a thing exist? I ask as some have...

    Kitchen Cabinet Edging.

I have to put some 18mm edging on the face edge of a kitchen cabinet/carcass. This edging isn't self adhesive or iron on. The old edge will remain, so this go on top of the existing. Does anyone have any ideas how to get this properly stuck on? Thanks John

Hi all, Hopefully an easy one... internal walls cement screed, bonding on top and then multi finish. I know it's a case of how thick the bonding is but roughly how many bags of multi finish do I need for each bag of bonding please? Thanks John

    Render inside of porch

Hi, Have a porch previously rendered on all sides of the internal walls. So not directly exposed to the elements. As it has this on already, can I just pva and go with one coat of standard mix sand and cement? Beading not previously used on some of the outward corners, so would "probably"...

    Speed skim size and type

Hi all, I only do plastering once in a while and can just about get a reasonably flat finish. Am thinking of getting a speed skim and just wondering if knowing my quite limited use it would be worth it to help me flatten finish coats. If yes, should I go for 1200mm or another size and if...

    LED Lights distance to beams

Hi, Installing new spotlights but right next to beams. Lots of room above and all around other than the side effectively on/next to the beam. Reasonable room for air circulation too. Question is one of heat and safety. All I can see/read is that as are not standard voltage / halogen lamps...

    Plaster retarder

Hi all. I read on a thread that there was nothing you could add to slow down the drying process, so to give more working time. However I have seen something called "ExtraTime plaster retarder", which comes in sachets. Does anyone have any experience with this or any other ideas please for...

    Earth wire thickness...

Hi all. Is the earth wire in 2.5mm mains cable to back box the same thickness as that in 1.5mm (or indeed 1.0mm) lighting cable. Just ensuring that all sockets are earthed from socket to metal back boxes and have lots of 1.5mm cable from which can strip out the earth wire...but is it the...

    Grouting around sockets

Hi all, A mental block about what "should" be done. Kitchen tiled and gone behind all the electrical sockets etc., a nice flat finish with no noticeable gaps from socket plates to tiles. Have still got to grout, my question is should I also grout around the sockets? I was thinking it may...

    Electric Towel Rail Installation

Hi all, Have read so many threads here with what can and cannot be done, so just seeking some clarity, please. I wish to install a 250w towel rail in a small shower room. The cable from the unit would run through a wall to an adjoining room (hallway cupboard), so no connections in the shower...

    Earthing back box

Hi, for some inlnunk reason when I opened up a double socket I could see that it wasn't directly earthed to the metal back box. I know that it is "effectively" earthed via the socket screws but thought it was best practice to directly earth the back box to the socket. Having checked the rest it...

    New doors, locks and painting

Hi, Firstly I apologise as wasn't sure if to put this in carpentry or painting/decorating. I have several new white primed doors, already hung in to new door linings. I have yet to drill for locks and handles and was wondering if this should be done before undercoating and gloss. I intend to...

    Doorways/Plastering

Hi all. Firstly sorry to put this in here as is a half carpentry and half plastering question...and didn't want to duplicate threads. I have affixed new door linings throughout a house which also needs plastering. My question is do I put up the door architrave before plastering or after? I...
