    flat roof advice

Hi, I'm building a summerhouse, the roof will be 12x16ft with a slope of 2 degrees (1 in 30), 18mm OSB. Would be grateful for advice, cannot decide between felt, fibreglass, one of those products that you paint on, or a kit from Screwfix with a single membrane. The latter option seems most...

    tankless toilet

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a loo in the uk that flushes from mains water rather than having a cistern? It's to replace an existing toilet in a small space. Thank you

    Is this odd?

I've been looking under the floor in our dining room due to insulating under the floorboards and wanting to install a couple of new rads. The one in there never worked that well, and I think I know why. There are two 22mm pipes that seem to be coming out of the boiler, I presume send and...

    tiny toilet

Our home has a really small downstairs loo. One solution would be to put the cistern behind the wall, so that a smaller pan is closer to the wall. This wall is nearly 30cm thick though! Workable????

    Water to summer house

Morning, I want to run a water supply down the garden to a summerhouse and outside tap, about 30m distance from the house. What's the best way to do this - 15mm plastic pipe (which I can do in a single run)? Insulation? Underground or above? Can speedfit fittings survive outside? Am...

    Incoming supply corroded

Hi, This pic is of the supply to the distribution board. The outside is corroded like this in a couple of places under the floor. House is 1930s with suspended floor. How much does this matter? Who's responsibility is it? If it's mine, how much am I looking at to fix it? Many thanks.

    Small foundations

Hi, I'm laying concrete to be the foundation of a small garden wall, which will be two blocks high. I've some blocks that are smooth on one side and textured on the other, which were a previous wall. Am thinking of putting them smooth side down on the bottom of the foundation, which will leave...

    Summerhouse base

Morning, I'm wanting to build a summerhouse, and keen to find out all I need to know before starting. The plan is to build something 3mx4m, with the highest point of the roof being <2.5m high. The site is not very level, a few inches drop from one end to the other, and can get very damp in...

    Drain-cover sealant

Hi there, We have a drain cover in our utility room, which has no grease at all and from time to time is a little niffy... Manhole grease seems really expensive and we don't need several kilos. Are there any alternatives? Thanks, Mark

    First time laying blocks

Hi, I'm building a small wall (two blocks high) in the garden. The foundations, despite being pegged out with a spirit level, are not quite level. I started laying concrete blocks today, but as I go along in order to keep them level the mortar underneath is getting a little thinner. Is...

    Open cement bag

Hi, I've a bag of cement that's been open for about 3 months (maybe 4) - do you think it's still OK to use? It's been kept in a dry garage, but the top is starting to clump a little - however the clumps break apart easily. Given that it's not expensive, if there's any doubt then I'll get rid...

    summer house

I'll thinking of building summerhouse, for which I'll make a concrete base, and have two things I'd be grateful for input for. Would it make sense to raise the floor structure from the ground a few cm by short "stilts" like a shed, in order to reduce moisture coming up? I was thinking of using...

    Retaining wall - wrong blocks?

I want to build a retaining wall in the garden, just two blocks high, and have got 100mm thermalite shield blocks. Selco websites says they have high moisture resistance, and are good for both external walls and foundations, so I thought fine for a little wall! A friend has just advised that...

    Suspended floor insulation

Hi there, Would this be suitable to insulate a suspended floor, if supported by struts underneath that are perpendicular to the rafters? https://www.selcobw.com/rockwool-thermal-cavity-insulation-1200-x-455-x-100mm-pk6-3-28m2 Thanks, Mark Ps am going for Rockwool rather that celetex to...

    Manhole query

I've a manhole in our utility room, which was years back outside then part of the garage, and we're thinking of getting an extension. Does the manhole need to be moved to outside? I've had conflicting advice on this. If it can stay, what type of grease would be good to seal it? Thanks, Mark...

    Fungus???

The downpipe in the pic actually runs inside the utility room, which had been damp due to two leaks. Yesterday it was painted with moisture resistant bathroom paint, and today these brown spores have appeared. They don't wipe off. Any ideas?

    Tumble dryer vent hose

Discovered today that our vent hose was full of water (about half a pint), and in one place the coil had rusted to the extent that it had made a small hole! I think it's as the outlet grid had a fine mesh that had got completely clogged work tiny bits of fluff over time. There is mould on the...

    JCB Combi Chuck

The chuck has seized on my drill, which is of course the piece of equipment I use FL the time. Gutted! It turns fine, but the teeth got wet (unknown to me) and rusted. They would only tighten and are fully closed. I've tried some wd40 to no avail. Is there a way to free them up? I've ordered a...
