    Defence Minister discusses Conscription

What is the general consensus on the threat from our Russian friends? The British army of the Rhine, along with the yanks had tens of thousands of troops in Germany to counter the threat. When the wall came down and the Soviet Union collapsed we all came home. Russia is now on a war footing...

New Alarm panel to use now Honeywell are gone

Going forward with the optima being discontinued I would like a panel that can replace an optima panel. So remain wired, but also have a SMS system to message the user if it’s in alarm. Next I would like a bolt on to an existing panel that can work an optima panel to send SMS messages when in...

New Alarm panel to use now Honeywell are gone

Hi All, Ive fitted the odd alarm over the years and used to fit the optima ADE models that are now finished. I’m thinking of swapping out an optima compact for something with a SIM card in that will notify on alarm. What is the simplest to fit and use in this spec please? Thanks in advance.

    Maintained Lights for Rugby Club

Hi I’m looking at some better options for our rugby club in respect of the maintained emergency lights. Not being involved too much in the commercial side I’m wondering if there is something out there that is compliant that doesn’t look like wart and is so bright that it spoils the lighting...

24 Dec - update - Grundfos pump still runs constantly

Stuck contact on the programmer , so like being on constant . Room stat is the next switch in series with the programmer so turning that off removes the power to brown wire motor power of the zone valve.

24 Dec - update - Grundfos pump still runs constantly

Disconnect all components of the wiring and have an electrician do an insulation resistance check of the fixed wiring . Rewire the Wiring centre to the Honeywell circuit diagram for an s plan. The electrician will then be familiar with what to expect and when at each connection in the wiring...

24 Dec - update - Grundfos pump still runs constantly

1.Have you had any work done around the time the fault started . Ie chance of a nail through a wire or drilling near a wire. 2. Were the zones valves changed because the contacts had become fused shut. 3. What is the voltage sat on the orange wire from WC when no call for Heat or HW. 4. Is this...

24 Dec - update - Grundfos pump still runs constantly

The pumps isnt one of the faulty batch , but 11 years old. If the wiring is correct on this why are valve actuators being replaced and if damaged why? If it runs for a few days before failing , I can't see how it's wired incorrectly. If a wire has a nail through it you could get something like...

It could be , why are the zone valves being changed? Are the switch contacts shorted? How often do these faults happen?

24 Dec - update - Grundfos pump still runs constantly

S plans are quite easy to fault find , but it does sound like something is what I call “eating parts”. If the circuits all test ok , I would fit a new pump and see how you go.

24 Dec - update - Grundfos pump still runs constantly

There was a batch of Grunfos pumps that was causing problems with controls. The pump appears to work ok , but does cause damage. Can you post a pic or model number of your pump?

24 Dec - update - Grundfos pump still runs constantly

Have you had a new pump yet , or problems start with new pump. I had a job where the grindfos pump was taking out programmers for fun. Causing contacts to weld shut or fail.

Cycling/oscillating hot water temperature with constant flow from tap

If there is a speed control on the pump , he may have turned it down. If not you need the pump checking first , blocked filters , blocked plate .

Cycling/oscillating hot water temperature with constant flow from tap

Blockage probably in the plate heat exchanger or the pump not running fast enough. Unlikely to be the pump , with it only being 2 to 3 years old. Sounds like you need someone to look at it. Check the pump speed if it’s adjsutable. If so set it higher.

Sailing Club shower facility design ideas please.

The sailing club have asked me to look at how best to run two Electric showers and three thermostatic showers with enough water and pressure. I’m guessing the mains water won’t be enough for all five . There is a loft space for some cold storage or a basement which would be better for...

Boiler broken - Combi vs Unvented

I'd say between 3.5 and 4 . Depends a lot on what controls /cylinder/boiler etc you have.

Boiler broken - Combi vs Unvented

LOL, Made to feel like one at times! Agree a lot depends on where you live, for how long , roof orientation, water use and expected increases in gas as to how you decide if it stacks up. I just like the idea of free hot water and it is an experiment for me. When it's up and running I will...

Boiler broken - Combi vs Unvented

If you have a nice south facing roof and some money in the bank that is losing value, get an unvented cylinder with a solar coil and fit a solar thermal panel. I'm in the middle of fitting one at the minute. I dont expect to save mega dosh, probably around £200 a year from my calcs, it's a bit...
