Water level in toilet bowl higher than usual, then lower than usual

If the system isn't venting properly, which often happens when there is a blockage and the inspection chamber is full of water, then the toilet trap can siphon. Vents are there to break the siphon and stop the trap water being sucked out.

PROFESSIONALS: which brand of boiler do you have in your home?

How does it perform when heating the hot water? Presumably you need to have a large hot water cylinder, as I don't believe there is any heat pump solution for instantaneous dhw? Also for the central heating I've read about the need for additional volume through a buffer tank but not sure if...

I wish electricity was cheaper than gas ... no don't laugh !

Gas is used to generate a significant proportion of electricity, about 40% last year. But gas turbines are not 100% efficient, and there are further losses involved in distribution etc. In addition there is significant investment in transitioning away from fossil fuels. If everyone used...

    Water softener maintenance

Our softener has brown sludge in the water which can be seen when the salt bin is empty. Is this normal? Presumably it's from impurities in the salt. It's probably at least 20 years old and I'm not sure how effective it is and if any maintenance is required. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Broken sink waste

Hi, We have discovered a leak caused by a snapped joint on a sink waste pipe. It is an old grey plastic pipe that has been solvent welded together and also painted in gloss white, so joining a new piece looks to be a difficult job. The outside pipe diameter measures approximately 37 mm, which...

    S-plan cylinder connections

It's a gate valve on the cylinder return but it probably doesn't do very much. The cylinder has been installed a bit like a single pipe radiator meaning it is slow to heat up. I think the previous posts are correct that it's a faulty installation. Thanks for helping, I will get it looked at soon.

    S-plan cylinder connections

There is only one thermostat. The main return is definitely the 28 mm pipe along the floorboard. It comes out the floor next to the heating valve from the radiator circuit and then flows towards the back of the cupboard and round back to the boiler. There seems to be a bypass valve which has to...

help with combi boiler mains flow rate

For hot water it is calculated by multiplying together the mass flow rate (kg/s), specific heat capacity of water (4.2 kJ/kg°C) and temperature rise (°C). If you multiply those units together you can see mathematically that it cancels down to kJ/s (i.e. kilowatts). A litre of water is about 1...

    S-plan cylinder connections

That's the way it has been installed - the cylinder flow and return are connected to the same pipe from the pump output. I've annotated a slightly better image to explain what's going on. Note the small pipe with the push fit is for a towel rail, not the cylinder.

    S-plan cylinder connections

It's the cylinder return. The one above it with the valve is the flow. The red arrow shows the main flow from the pump.

    S-plan cylinder connections

The horizontal gate valve is to the lower cylinder coil output. The pipe along the floorboard is the return. Where it comes out the floor at the bottom of image is the return from the radiators. It then flows along the floor and goes back to the boiler. I'll try to upload a better picture.

    S-plan cylinder connections

I have what appears to be an S plan system, but the hot water cylinder connections are slightly different to a typical setup. It's an old system so I wondered if there might be a reason for these differences. The image below shows the valve assembly. The pump output comes vertically down (red...

Fitted wardrobes smell and mould - damp?

We have noticed musty smells and slight discolouring of the ceiling in a fitted wardrobe, so am concerned about mould. It is on an external wall so I'm assuming it's because the walls are cold and it's not a well ventilated space. I have put some moisture absorbers in there which has helped to...

Is there a general combi boiler brand which is considered best value for money?

I still run a 25 year old cast iron boiler and haven't yet found a modern heat only that I would be happy replacing it with. I wonder if it would even be a false economy if the install cost plus repair and servicing costs are never recovered through efficiency savings - but I could be wrong...

    Oversizing radiators

I'm considering replacing a few radiators and wondered if there would be any problems with oversizing them. My idea is to reduce the heating flow/return temperature to increase the efficiency of a condensing boiler (which isn't yet installed so I don't have any details). Are there any problems...
