    Replace EV Flexi hose

Hi Is it possible for a DIYer to replace the flexi hose leading to the EV on a grant vort pro boiler? I tried to reenergise the EV but it won't let any air in. The hose does look a bit twisted and knackered. What would I need to turn off and release etc.? Thanks

    Expansion vessel full of water

Hi Sorry for another expansion vessel question but I can find this asked previously Had my boiler service yesterday and the engineer said it is full of water and it needs to be drained. He didn't mention anything about having popped. I pressed the valve and zero water came out. I replaced the...

    Siliconing Advice

Hi Does anyone have any advice on what I should do. Had my bathroom refurbished about 2 years ago and the silicone in the shower cubicle does not want to stay sealed. The fitters attempt looked neat but did not stay long, I've done it 2 and 3 times, the last time being a generous and neat job...

    Neighbours patio

My neighbour has recently laid the blockwork for his new patio and it probably about a 1m high at our boundary. It's on sloping ground so probably less than 300mm above the ground at the other end. It's not ideal as they can see in a lot of our garden, but not all. I don't want an argument with...

    Painting over the wrong colour

Hi I just completed the first Topcoat on my recently completed MDF entertainment unit and the graige-ish kind of colour turned out to be bloody pink, sort of a pale cooked salmon pink. It's there is rule of thumb as to what colours would easily go over this, obviously not too dark? Thanks

    Polycrylic paint

Hi I've just built a MDF entertainment unit that I considering coating in Polycrylic paint, is it worth it? They'll be a lot of banging on it by the children.

    Bowing Counter

I am almost there with my self build entertainment unit and noticed today a issue that I was hoping wouldn't (wistfully) wouldn't occur. The inner vertical of the shelving units on either side are causing a slight bowing of the counter top. The counter top is 2x18mm boards and the verticals on...

    Professional Boiler Advice

To those boiler installers out there, if a customer asked you to install a boiler somewhere that you knew would block as aspect of the regular service, would you do it anyway or refuse? What would the regulating body do if a complaint was made to them on this?

    Painting Fresh MDF

I'm about to begin painting a newly built entertainment unit made from Medite (if relevant) MDF. What paints would people use, they'll need to be hard wearing as the kids will also use them for toys. Thanks

    Oil Boiler Soot

My oil boiler is producing black smoke and soot. Didn't really notice it but as its on more it's pretty clear and getting everywhere. The soot has been fine but last night it produced relatively bigger chunks for a period, now they're back to small. I have a service booked for Tuesday, does...

    Cover an architrave

How would people suggest I cover up the architrave in the photo below? I dont want to see it all, I'd like a totally flush door. Any special filler or will it just crack? Thanks

    Nest

Hi About 2 months ago we had a neat fitted and UFH with its own thermostat. The CH did work when it was first installed but with it being summer it was left unused. Now the Nest does not appear to be firing up the boiler. The green dot is on the heat link which means they're connected. The UFH...

    Pressure limiter

Can anyone recommend a pressure limiter to use with a water softener? The instructions say if the pressure is above 5 bar, limit it to 3.5 bar. I've told the plumber several times but he hasn't done it so I plan to buy it and give it to him to fit the next time he visits. Thanks

    MDF storage unit /entertainment unit

Hi What thickness of MDF do people recommend for a storage unit. It will be self supporting off the floor and fit onto a end wall measuring 3m x 2.4m. The base unit including the circulation space behind will be about 600mm deep, the cupboards and shelves etc. above will be set back and total...

    Engineered flooring on concrete

I need to lay engineered board on top of concrete which is over old foundations. It's a strip about 500mm wide, then a step to one side and the original timber flooring on the other. The majority of it is very old concrete, some more recent where a wall was recently demolished and levelled...

    Level step riser

I need to make a step flush in my new extension as shown in the attached dodgy sketch. The recess is about 40mm deep, 700mm wide and the step about 150mm high (I need to measure). I plan to use c24 timber to make it level but my question is what to fix it with? Engineered flooring is going on...

    Plywood Overlay on Cement

Hi I'm about to start laying 6mm ply over existing floorboards, fixing with 20mm screws. As its in 1 half ofa new extension there's smallish areas where cement or concrete has been used to level where the old external wall used to be. I dont think it's screed as the new built floor is still due...

    Replacing floorboards

I need to replace the odd floorboard of the base timber flooring in my Victorian house. What specs should I look for in the board? I will measure the width and thickness. It's not tongue and groove. Thanks

    External oil boiler

Is it possible to install an external oil boiler in an old out door store cupboard? This model does not have a sealed flue available, but then because the space only has the boiler inside it and is not air tight, is this important? I could even replace the door with a louvred door if that would...
