Have I bought the wrong size flange!?

I am looking to fit a flange to my hot water cylinder (Range UltraCal 3) in order to run a pumped thermostatic mixer shower from it. I did a bit of research and found the technical specs for my cylinder at: http://www.range-cylinders.co.uk/products/ultracal/ After a bit of head scratching...

    Joining pipes... Help I'm Confused!

I realise this question has been asked numerous times in various forms, but I am still confused. The water enters my house through a metal pipe of some description (not copper and not lead). How can I determine what this pipe is made of? It is around 7/8" in external diameter (I can't measure...

Painting over old plaster after wallpaper removal.

A collegue of mine has removed the wallpaper from a room in his house with a view to painting it. Under the wallpaper is bare plaster. Is there any particular preparation that would be recommended prior to applying emulsion (Any particular primer/undercoat)? The plaster is probably original -...

Brick Fire Surround - What to use for a Lintel??

I am planning to construct a brick fire surround but am not sure what to use for a lintel over the opening. It will need to be strong enough to take three or maybe four courses of bricks over an approximately 900mm (35 1/4 inch) opening. Will a flat steel bar do, and if so what thickness and...

Running cable under a suspended floor.

This may be a silly question, but are there any rules about how cable should be run underneath a suspended floor? Does it have to be channeled through the joists or can it just be run along the ground? Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Ben.

Screwfix, 25mm MDPE pipe to 15mm copper.

Why dosn't screwfix sell anything for connecting the 25mm MDPE pipe that they stock to 15mm copper pipework? A 25mm - 22mm copper adaptor is available as is also a 20mm - 15 mm but as they don't sell any other 20mm MDPE products, I don't see how this is of any use!? Any ideas on how I can...

    Help with choosing a sander.

If I wish to sand an area of lumpy plasterwork to obtain a smooth finish, which kind of sander would be best to use (Random orbital, belt.... )? It is too large an area to reasonably do it manually with a sanding block! Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks, Ben

FCU on a 45amp radial cooker circuit?

Can a 3amp fused connection unit be added after the terminal outlet of my 45amp radial cooker circuit? I have just unpacked our new gas hob to find that the ignition is supplied from the mains. Am kicking myself because we had the kitchen rewired last month and I didn't think to specify that a...

Cleaning grout from the edge of 1'' thick quarry tiles.

We have taken the wall out between our kitchen and dining room and would like to extend the original kitchen floor (6'' x 6'' x 1'' quarry tiles layed in the 1930's) across to meet with the dining room floor. I have obtained enough tiles from a reclaimation yard to complete the job, but am...

Plastering. How thin can I go?

I have stripped all the plaster from my kitchen walls - most of it was falling off anyway - and am just about to replaster. The thing is, our new kitchen will only fit in if I apply a 5mm thick coat of plaster to the back wall. Is this going to be too thin? Is it likely to crack or will I get...
