Overheat Lockout? If so, will it reset itself?

OK, another approach. Can I shut off the mains water at the stopcock and drain the cold taps but still leave the CH on (thermostat low)? Or does the CH need some cold feed from the mains? Getiing quite stressed now! :(

Overheat Lockout? If so, will it reset itself?

Thanks oilhead. Any precautions I can take? Have the thermostat set low, for example? Is it worth a callout? If anyone's keen, I'd be interested in a link to an explanation of these lockouts - ta!

Overheat Lockout? If so, will it reset itself?

Hi all. Can anyone give me a bit of advice? Glow-worm Flexicom cx range combi boiler, 18 months old, serviced a week ago and apparently clean and tidy. CH stopped after a couple of hours of working nicely. Hot water working fine. I have the idiot's guide, and that gives a total of two...

Lead flashing split - is flashing tape too much of a bodge?

That's actually very reassuring, Alastair! :D

Lead flashing split - is flashing tape too much of a bodge?

Thanks everyone (well, nearly everyone!). Hugely appreciated. I'll go away and have a long, hard think and let you know how I got on (assuming I'm not too ashamed of myself) .

Lead flashing split - is flashing tape too much of a bodge?

Hi all. First, sorry if this has been covered a million times already. I did search a bit! I have a gulley between a slate roof and a wall which has a large-ish area of lead flashing in it (about 2m by 0.5m?). This has developed a couple of ridges, one of which has a crack in it which is...

Kettling - should I switch off?

Well, the pump is humming very quietly to itself and hums a different note for each of the speed settings, so I think it's in good nick. Not quite sure how to be certain though. I replaced it quite a while ago when the old one died - now that was a serious kettle! Thanks guys - will be less...

Kettling - should I switch off?

It's an ancient Stelrad Group Ideal Elan, serving its last weeks before replacement. Apologies, got to go out(!), any further advice gratefully received!

Kettling - should I switch off?

Loft, above the boiler (which is in the kitchen). Oh, and the tap I'm closing is also in the loft, next to and slightly below the tank.

Kettling - should I switch off?

Wow, quick reply! Thanks! Sorry, I meant the mains feed to the tank - the one which has a float valve and is used to refill the tank/system. Ashamed to say I didn't know there was another... so... am I OK to close it? Thanks again.

Kettling - should I switch off?

Hi all. Could I impose on your expertise? My boiler starts to kettle after an hour or two of operation, and I'm working my way through de-crudding the system (de-sludge under way, de-scale to follow) but it's pretty damn cold at the moment, so I'd like to run it quite a lot. (the system...

Gas boiler CO - just a service? Really?

I didn't mean to start a war, chaps! Update. Never, ever EVER deal with British Gas. Having wasted almost an entire day waiting for this service-or-repair, I discovered that the useless sods had left a message on the phone I rang them from originally, despite on at least three occasions...

Gas boiler CO - just a service? Really?

OK, so all should be fine for me (though possibly not for the engineer), unless he has an attack of the awkwards. In which case, que sera sera. Thanks a lot, guys - you've saved me a lot of stress. :D

Gas boiler CO - just a service? Really?

Maybe I spoke too soon - gas_man_gaz, does that mean the engineer might b*gg*r off then? As I say, I don't mind paying, it's just the possibility of a cold weekend (in more ways than one!).

Gas boiler CO - just a service? Really?

Thanks for that - looks like the other half may not cause me physical harm, then. The only appliance using gas is the boiler, so no big inconvenience to us having it disced. The Corgi chap might have a different view.... TOFO - must remember that. :-)

Gas boiler CO - just a service? Really?

Hi all. Our elderly gas boiler is behaving disgracefully (burning yellow), so a nice chap from National Grid came round, stuck an 'Immediately Dangerous' notice on it (on account of the CO possibility [p.s. I have a CO detector, no probs detected]) and put a disc in the meter outlet. I...

Immersion heater wiring - stop me doing something silly!

Tickly - thanks for the answer. I'm not 100%, but the current cable to the shower runs uninterrupted from the wall plaster to the shower unit and is a good bit longer than a cable to the immersion would have been, so perhaps it's OK - I'd have expected some obvious junction if it had been...

Immersion heater wiring - stop me doing something silly!

Thanks for the input, guys. As I say, I reckon the immersion heater was taken out because they wanted an electric shower. Of course we now have to boil a kettle if we need hot water during the summer, which is pretty crap really (still, if it's a straight choice between shower and...

Immersion heater wiring - stop me doing something silly!

Hi all. Amateur, fair concept of mains electricity, but also some idea of my limitations.... Anyway, I've stuck an immersion heater into my hot water cylinder (thanks to the folks on the plumbing forum) and got a timer in place and ready to go, but have realised I'm an idiot and should...
