Normal filling pressure - combi boiler hot or cold?

Should be a quick one: CH needs topping up. Not really paid much attention to the pressure guage in a while - just noticed it's hovering just off '0 bar' when cold . I know what needs doing with the filling loop (tho never needed to do it before). The manual says to fill to 'Normal...

    Resin coffee table.

Hey. Apologies for random topic title... A work colleague has asked me to make her a coffee table after I'd made her some nursery furniture. She's had this idea of having thin disks of varying sized logs/tree branches set into/covered with some sort of clear resin for the table top ...

    Flip over chopsaw/table saw

Mornin'. A very, merry sunday to all! Was whiling away the hours in B&Q the other day ... as I do  Came across a compound mitre saw that could be flipped over in its stand to become a table saw. Never seen one of these before (not in B&Q at least). Half price at £149. 2000w...

    Bloody ambulance chasers!

How do. About 3 weeks ago, my wife (with me in the passenger seat) bumped into the back of another car driven by a 22yr old bloke. It was early morning, heavy rain and approaching a renowned black-spot roundabout. We had slowed down to approx 10mph, preparing to stop due to traffic at the...

    Deck/veranda project.

Howdy doo. Having spent a year now, bashing away at the innards of our house, me and the mrs me are turning our attentions to the garden. One project we have in mind for the less-cacky weather time is to create a raised deck/veranda area around the front and side of the house. The house...

    Steel cable ballustrade

hey. Halfway through replacing the handrail and spindles on my brothers staircase. He's had an idea that using steel cable running horizontally between the newls would look rather spiffy instead of regular, vertical wood spindles. I've seen it a few times in poncey restaurants etc.. but...

    Nursery Furniture

In yet another effort to expand my wood-butchery skills, I offered to make some nursery furniture for a lady I work with. She was after a changing unit and a matching wardrobe for her daughters newborn. Having seen the prices of pieces from places like mothercare, she realised that she...

    Erbauer 1/2" router.

Hey. A freind has asked me to fit her kitchen including new chipboard worktops, mason mitred in on 3 sides. Can't really justify spending more than £60 on a router to do the job at the mo and yet just can't resist that 'must-buy-new-tool' itch, so don't want to hire. I've been using a...

    Cows

SOCIALISM: You have 2 cows; you give one to your neighbour. COMMUNISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and gives you some milk. FASCISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and sells you some milk. NAZISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and shoots you. BUREAUCRACY: You...

    Handrail & spindle replacement.

How do. In a bid to improve my wood-working skills, I'm putting myself about abit like some sawdust coated slapper. Started a job for my brother, replacing his old handrail and spindles on his stairs. Going to take a couple of weeks as I will be doing the work at weekends, making the parts...

    Prospective employee cold contacting.

Hi. So as not to hijack the thread regarding people contacting businesses in search of a job, I've started this one. I really want to start on a new career path. Been umming and aahing for ages as to which direction to take. I've a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice but can't find...

Should he stay or should he go?

Im an acting manager of a warehouse in N Wales. Just had a new lad start with us. He's about 18, looking for a rent and beer money job. Can't fault the work he does (order picking/packing, tidying etc..) considering he's only been with us a few days. Problem is: He literally will not stop...

    Knauf 170mm glass fibre insulation.

    In case you didn't know - B&Q are doing a 'buy-one-get-one-free' on Knauf 170mm insulation. £28 for 2 rolls. Nae bad! :D

    Secondary glazing film.

I have fairly large, single glazed windows in my 1930's semi. Couldn't afford double glazing and was fed up of cold air/draughts coming from the glass and frame. Bought 3 packs of the StormGuard, secondary glazing film from B&Q for £9 for the lot. 1hr's work later: nice and warm with no...

    40 grit, 1/2 sheet sandpaper

Hey. Looking to sand back my stairs - remove years of varnish and paint. I have taken as much of the varnish off with stripper and a scraper so I'm now left with the in-grained stuff. I've got a 1/2 sheet orbital sander to shift the bulk of the crap but the lowest grit sheet I can find...

Airbricks sealed by cavity wall insulation guys.

Hey. Recently had my wall cavities insulated. Guys did a great job and the house is really warm. Yesterday, I noticed that they'd filled in the airbrick that sits halfway up the wall with silicone or similar. :? Just wondering if this was normal? Would the blown insulation negate the...

Ripping 18mm, 8x4 sheet chipboard for loft flooring.

If I use 18mm, 8x4 chipboard, ripped to workable sizes to use as loft flooring, is there any reason why it might be weaker than 18mm T&G chipboard flooring? Is there anything I could do to support the butted edges (where they don't meet over joists) in the absence of T&G's? Cheers. :D

    chopsaw blade size tollerance?

Hey. I'm after a fine blade for my chopsaw (cheap 'n' cheerful Performance power feller). The current blade size is 255mm x 28mm x 3mm. I've not been able to find one with 60-70t on t'interweb that has the same specs. I have seen ones that are 255mm but have a 30mm bore. Would that work...

First cut of new grass - what's best to use?

Hey. Sowed grass seed a week ago and; bugger me! It grew! (may seem unsurprising but i've been know to kill plastic plants!) New grass shot up to about 10mm pretty much overnight so I'm guessing it'd be couple of weeks before its first cut (at 3in or so?) I've got a petrol mower, an...
