    Screw thread types

I’m looking for screws to fit some vintage cabinet knobs. Seems I need a ‘*open’ threaded version (left in pic) rather than the ‘*tight’ (right) version (*my terms!). I’ve no idea what the open threaded versions are called when ordering. Imperial, maybe? Any guidance appreciated.

Neff Combi Oven installation - mystery plastic

I’m swapping out our old Neff Combi oven/microwave for exactly the same model. One thing that’s puzzling me is a plastic sticker covering what looks like a vent on the top surface. Our old appliance doesn’t have this yet the symbols on the sticker suggests we leave it in position. Anyone know if...

    Sound transfer between floors

Not sure where best to post this so thought I’d start here… Simply put, in our recently completed extension we can hear noise transmitting between the floors very, very clearly. People chatting, the noise of the curtains being drawn along a metal curtain pole sounds like they’re in the same...

Newly laid T&G chipboard floor just has to go

Frustratingly today I've learnt I need to replace a newly laid subfloor due to incredible amount of squeaking. I mean every footstep '' !!! We think we've identified the cause - an acoustic isolating rubber strip is allowing movement between the boards. We've tried no screws...

Have spent all day balancing the system and still no heat!!

Radiators fitted to the ground floor of my new, part-finshed, two-story, extension refuse to get warm. We're keen to get some use out of the room during xmas hence the part-finished state. Our plumber thought adding one radiator to the yet to be completed upstairs might help get heat down to...

    UFH has gone haywire

Hi, Looking for some advice. Came home to find the UFH had stopped working. We haven't a clue about these things so bear with me. The background: Installed less than two years ago as part of a major refurb. Everything was set up by our plumber including room thermostats which we've...

No hot water but rads okay?

My old central heating system seems to be playing up. Boiler is okay but we're only getting heat to the rads but no hot water. However, hot water seems to arrive if we adjust the thermostats on a couple of rads up to max. (or at least above 3). Coincidence or a clue to the problem? Before I get...

    Falcon Range Cooker

I'm looking to sell our Falcon range but they seem to receive little interest on ebay. It's only three years old and cost over £2,500. Surely here's a used market? Anyone know of dealers in these? If I can't sell it how difficult it is to move/dismantle. Are there specialist firms?? It's in a...

UFH and engineered wood floor, confusing advice

We're looking to put an engineered wood floor over UFH and are getting a little confused with the sales patter. We've been told: 1. "Never glue down an engineered floor over UFH to the sub floor- float it, gluing only the T&G". (our room crosses both concrete and a suspended floor - it's a...

    underfloor heating, sufficient?

We're in the throws of building works which consist knocking through two rooms of the exisiting house and adding an extension to form a 60m2 open-plan area. We'll have bi-fold doors along the face of the extension plus other windows and intend to fit engineered wood flooring. We are considering...

    Engineered wood and underfloor heating

is there a engineered board thickness best suited to use with UFH? Was thinking 21mm but someone mentioned that size would limit heat transfer so c.15mm is better. Are there any rules?

    fitting an inline lamp switch

can't seem to find any confirmation on the web for this seemingly simple job. Want to add an inline switch to a metallic lamp which is wired with 3 core. Is it a matter of splitting the live across the switch terminals? The plastic switch seems to have earth terminals, do i use these or leave...

Door hinges - Ball-bearing vs. phosphor washers??

Can anyone enlighten me as to which are best/most appropriate - ball-bearing hinges or phosphor washered hinges? (If there is much of a difference that is). I'm replacing door furniture (4" hinges) throughout the house and never knew there was so much choice in humble hinges.

help required - fitting a 2 gang dimmer

I'm looking to swap a standard double rocker light switch for a double dimmer - controling a ceiling light and wall lights (one switch in the room). I've assummed the wiring for the dimmer would be the same as the existing switch but on trying nothing works. I've realised one thing that may be...

    Wooden Casements seals

We've just taken delivery of our first few replacement windows - Double glazed wooden casements - produced by a local joinery. They have a single seal running on the inside edge of the openings. Must admit not discussed seals when ordering, just glazing spec. I'm curious to know if a single seal...
