    Insulate wood framed box bay

Hi Morning all. I'm trying to figure out the best approach to insulate an upstairs box bay (house is circa 1910). Double glazing has been fitted, but nothing has been done to the wall below and it is very cold and since removing a bay window seat a bit draughty as well. Construction is (was)...

    Location of cistern

Is it acceptable to locate the cistern somewhere other than behind the toilet? Or won't physics allow it? In this case I want to put a concealed cistern to the side of the toilet and have a pipe run make 2 turns and then into the back of the toliet. Ta.

    Powerfloat concrete issue.

I've recently had a 40m2 slab of concrete laid, in the my kitchen/diner, which was powerfloated. After a period of time I then sealed it with Watco Powerfloat Concrete sealer (this was recommended to me elsewhere). What a disaster - It hasn't adhered properly and has now started pealing. I...

Top Hung Velux window hinge adjustment

Hi I probably need to call the installer back, but is anyone aware of a way to adjust the position of the sash within the frame of a new-ish (1 year) Velux top hung roof window? I'm finding it difficult to close on the fully closed lock position and on closer inspection I can see that the sash...

Redring 3 in 1 hot water heater

Hi all Anyone have any experiences of this product. I found two reviews on Amazon which say it's hard to fit and doesn't get hot enough. The alternative I think would be the Insinkerator version. Thanks Andy

Whirlpool fridge freezer not auto defrosting

Hi I have a side by side Whirlpool fridge freezer that is not auto defrosting (model number 8586 150 15002). I replaced the thermostat unit but that didn't help. I am going to test the heater element for continuity today when I get hold of a tester, but other than that I'm not sure what it...

    Light not on light circuit

Hi all So I'm in the process of putting in a downstairs toilet and I though I'd make a start by removing all the gubbings from the space to be used (cupboard under the stairs). I plan to ensure everything is accessible for the workman to save some time and mess. Now I obviously need an...

Hi I thought I had asked this question a couple of years, but cannot find the post... Anyway I want to tap into the existing clay waste pipe that runs under our house. The existing stack is at the back of the house where the current waste goes to. It then runs under the house and on into...

    Fitting sisal stair runner

Hi there. I've just purchased a sisal stair runner and am struggling to figure out the best way to fit it. The instructions I can find say to start at the bottom by pinning the runner under the first gripper and working up and then doing the same at the top at the back of the landing...

    Bathroom extractor problem

OK so my bathroom extractor fan is not working (connected to lighting circuit). I bought a replacement of the same make but not the exact model. The replacement I bought was a manrose with timer - but the original didn't have a timer so I just by passed the timer circuit - that shouldn't...

Central Station Software - for mobile devices?

Whilst I can get my alarm to call me in the event of an event, it can also send digital data to a central monitoring station if this is something I've subscribed to, I haven't. But has anyone come across any software that can interpret this data from a smart phone? i.e. create your own mobile...

New alarm connection to phone line

Hi I'm in process of wiring up my alarm panel to the phone line and I just need to confirm something. Should I be connecting the alarm itself to the phone line by the 2 connectors marked 'line' (is there a way round for the cores?) and the rest of the house to other connector - in this case...

    Noisey Potterton Puma

I just had my boiler serviced and they replaced the fan. This does seem to have improved pressure in the upstairs bathroom. But it still very noisey when running. Sort of a load gurgling?? Anything else that would cause this? And is it actually a problem? Thanks Andy

3 core and earth - but don't need the earth..

When using 3 core and earth but I don't need the earth - what's best practice - just snip the earth as close to the sheath as possible or something else? This is for a bathroom fan with run on timer. It is isolated by a triple pole switch. The fan doesn't have an earth connection (double...

    Fraught with danger

It seems electrical work is fraught with danger. Either from doing a dodgy job jourself and setting fire to your house. Or by getting in an electrician who wear's a stetson. All the non stetson ones seem to be very busy indeed. Us DIYers find ourself in this situation; we know something we want...
