Architect changed our plans without our concent.

I had drawings done for a single storey rear extension. It was originally drawn at 3.6 M deep and the architect applied for planning permission on our behalf, saying it should be no problem. On the decision date, the drawing was amended by the architect to a 3M deep extension and approval...

Fixing bad floor tiling. Any way to add support under tiles?

A friend, who assured me he knew what he was doing, put down tiles on my kitchen floor and although they are neatly down, he used adhesive put in blobs on the tile, then put it on the floor. Needless to say, some tiles don't have much support under them and I cracked one by standing on it. The...

Pipe bender or elbows. Which is best?

I am doing some plumbing pipe work in my house (it is mostly inside a cupboard) and have been bending pipes and using solder elbows only where necessary. Is this the right approach? When looking at other pipe installations done by plumbers, I have seen only straight pipe and lots of elbows. Is...

which flue option is best? Through the wall, or flat roof

My new combi boiler is going to be installed in an outside cupboard, which has a flat felt roof over wood floorboards. The CORGI guy says to put a longer (1.5m) flue across the cupboard, and out through the 9" brick wall. He also wants to put a plume kit on, although strictly it does not need...

replacing old compression fittings with combi install

The CORGI plumber who is going to comission my new boiler said he would prefer me to do the water pipe work as the existing pipework is all done with compression fittings and he wants nothing to do with it. He suggested replacing it all with solder joints or plastic. The house is 1965 and I...

Routing of main equipotential bonding wires

What are the rules for routing the earth conductor from where the water pipe enters the house to the CU. Does it have to be in conduit, in a safe zone, or can I just cable tie the earth wire along my existing water pipe as it runs right past the CU anyway. Thanks.

porch footing depth - with solid limestone 400mm down.

I am digging out for the footing for my new brick porch. I was planning to dig 600mm down and 450mm wide, but 400mm down I have hit solid limestone. It is not that hard -as far as rock goes, but it is going to be a lot of work to break it up with the SDS drill and dig out another 200mm...
