Rafters - are these timbers required

Hi, I want to insulate my garage roof rafters and the timbers attached at at 45degrees in the picture will make the job a pain but I was wondering if they are actually structurally required, or were they just used in the construction of the roof and just left attached?

I WANT my gloss to yellow....?

I am redecorating our house. Most of the houses woodwork is fine but some needs re glossing. I don't want to completely re gloss every bit in the entire house, but just do what needs doing without there being an obvious difference between the old and the very white new gloss. How can I match the...

Pipe & fittings for new thermostatic shower

So I'm installing a new shower with thermostatic valve in my bathroom. The pipes that fed the old shower are grey pushfit pipes (speedfit?). The new shower valve is quite a weighty unit with no screw holes for mounting or anything, so I'm guessing will have to be supported by the pipes...

I filled some holes in my concrete floor about a week ago. I bought one of these ready to mix bags. The concrete still hasn't gone off though. When I scratch the top of it with my nail, I can scratch some off. What have I done wrong?

    bitumen paint

I have some holes in my concrete kitchen floor, from 1 to 6 inches deep. The floor seems to have about a 1 inch black waterproof layer on top. I was going to fill the holes with 4:1 mix concrete, but I guess I'd need to re-seal the floor if I've broken the damp proof layer? Could I use bitumen...

Low voltage downlights & mains voltage

My new house has (for some reason) in the kitchen, 2 rows of low voltage downlights and 1 row of mains voltage. Would there be any problem with buying all low voltage units, and just leaving out the transformer and putting in a mains bulb in 3 of them (i.e. just using the units themselves) or...

In the kitchen of the house I've just bought, all the tiles by the doorway were broken. When I was lifting all of them to re-tile (we're getting a new kitchen too) the concrete just fell away, and underneath is what I suspect to be plaster! Now it is STILL DAMP also and I have a few questions-...

Buying house - suspected burst pipes

OK, so I'm looking at buying a house and went for a viewing today. It has been un-lived in for 1 year. There is water damage through the house though and lots of holes punched in the walls. I SUSPECT what's happened is the pipes have frozen and burst during the cold snap, leaking water, and...

    bathroom from start to finish.

I used laminate on my floor, just make sure it's the waterproof bathroom laminate. I left the expansion gap under the skirting so I had to lay the floor first, then fix the skirting, then tile up to the skirting. I put the bath in first before anything else (no point in tiling behind it or...
