    Conservatories - Checking Fareham Firm

Hi - Any one got experience of Crofton Home Improvement Centre (CHIC) in Fareham? They've given us a good quote, but there seems to be multiple companies listed on the web with either that name in that area or at that very same address. Just want to make sure that all is above board..>We...

    20mm Shingle as hard core?

I'm going to build a small patio in an area I currently have covered in 20mm shingle. Is it ok to tamp the shingle down and have that as a base to lay cement on? I have a small volume of scalpings left from previous project, but not enough to fill the area. Would it be best to have a sand...

    Pond turmoil - help please

Hi All I recently had a crack at building a water feature. A rectangular, above ground pond (6' by 3') with a wall up the back with a blade, waterfall fountain. The problem is this..... The outside wall is a brick skin which is slightly higher than the internal block skin. Over the...

Pointer needed on flint rendering walls

Hi Thanks for the offer. I ended up using the flint blocks. They do look great, but in the back of my head, I know they're not the real deal....If you don't mind sharing the info, I'd still be keen to know though. Cheers

HELP - Double paving disaster (possibly)

I've just brushed a dry mix into my rustic path and several issues have sprung up: Unlike my other path, the mix here has instantly smeared the old brick red pavers a dull grey (despite a lot of brushing). I used a mix of 3 sand to 1 cement. The second disaster is the weather...despite...

    building a garden wall

Hi barb I'm in the middle of a garden wall project and have been trying to use my bricky on the facing skin of the double skin wall. If the bricks conform to the standard brick / block dimensions you should be ok. If they are bigger, then you could try taking the runners off the bottom of the...

    Contract delivery driver issues

He actualy looked like the boat captain from "Jaws", with the same cavalier attitude...I almost expected him to take one look at my driveway and say..."We're going to need a bigger crane". I didn't go looking for compensation from the store itself as I have a good relationship there...just...

    Contract delivery driver issues

Dear all Note - I'm sure this isn't representitve of all contract drivers, however... I've recently been buying a lot of building materials from a certain builders merchants...on the days when the companys own driver has delivered, he has skilfully navigated the mass of trees and telephone...

Dry mix for brick paver garden path?

I've set out a rustic garden path using brick pavers..it's about 1m wide and 22m long...I've bedded the pavers onto a bed of sharp sand which in turn is on a bed of consolidated scalpings. How do I make a "dry mix" to brush in and bond it all together? I'm getting conflicting advice...what's...

Pointer needed on flint rendering walls

Thanks Chessspy I'm looking to build a wall with one side containing flint (not pretend stuff). Not sure I understand all the terms you are using (being a complete amature). Do you put the morter in the gap first and then bed the flints? Do you use a cloth to "point" (as such)...

Pointer needed on flint rendering walls

HI Any one able to either point me in the direction of information, or tell me how I can go about making flint pannels / rendering in a brick wall? I figure I need to know: 1) Where to get the flints 2) the mix needed to make the morter to hold the flints 3) how to do it? All help...

    Reasonable price for reclaimed bricks?

I'm about to build a small rustic retaining wall - about 50' in overall length and about 2 feet high. I am looking for old weathered bricks that would suit a cottage garden (by the way, "rustic" is my way of saying, I've never done this before so not everything will be 100% perfect). I'm also...

little brick garden wall with flint panels - how?

Does anyone know how you go about building brick walls with flint panel inserts? I am looking to build a rustic low wall on a budget of next to noting using a mix of old bricks. I'm a complete novice, so feel free to say if this is biting off too much. Thanks

Creating curved footings for path / retaining walls

Thanks for the detailed response - my problem is how to get the foundation level on a curve. With a straight path, I would use planks either side and be able to scrape across the top of these so the foundation mix was level - without level edges on the curves, I'm not sure....probably missing...
