    Cost of oil boiler

Hi I’m nowhere near gas mains out here. My oil boiler seems to be on its last legs. If I just get a similar new replacement boiler fitted, any ideas how much I would be looking at? 2-bed bungalow. Seen some boilers just north of 1100 quid for the boiler not fitting. Old one is a combi. Cheers Terry

    Dimensions of machine screw head

Hi I need to undo a machine screw. Iris slotted but very tight. A screw driver as broad as the slot tends to just twist and would damage the slot. I need a screwdriver to square drive bit as thick as the slot - any ideas pls? Terry

    Bench dog clamps

Pls can you tell me how “bench dog clamps” work? Those I’ve looked at seem to consist of a tube 19 or 20 mm with an arm at right angles to that and an overcentre clamp on the end of the arm. I don’t understand why when you operate the clamp the tube doesn’t just slide up out of the hole in the...

    Sliding mitre saw

Hi chaps any advice/experiences with sliding mitre saws please? (I’ve looked through forum but some discussions are from a while ago.) Got a Pioneer brand mitre saw (not sliding) that cost me about £17 17 years ago and thinking of moving up. Not to DeWalt 600-800 £s (though they do one at around...

    bailey plane depth adjustment problem

HI chaps, I've got a problem with a Bailey plane. It has a knurled knob you turn to move the blade in and out so setting the depth of cut. This knob runs on a threaded bar about 1.5 inches long, like a bolt only with no head. That bar is screwed into a threaded recess in the back of the frog...

DeWalt DWE560 circular saw change shoe

Hi chaps, my circular saw got knocked off a shelf to the floor and the impact distorted the shoe slightly. I took it to a place to get it fixed and they got it better than it was, but .... I'm looking at replacing the shoe (£30-ish). There's a bolt at the back which should be no problem but the...

    stripping paint

Hi all, I've painted a couple of interior doors by just cleaning and painting over previous coat. It doesn't last. The surface soon gets mucky and a little bit flaky. So I'm wondering if I need to strip back to the wood and re-prime / re-paint? If so I wonder how? I recently used a blowlamp -...

    dripping tap

Hi there, I've got an annoying drip from the tap in the kitchen. It's one of those taps with a single spout which comes up about a foot then bends to point downwards and can be swung from side to side. There is a tap handle on each side, cold on right, hot on left, each about a three-inch long...

YART - Yet Another Router Table question

Hi chaps, I bought a router recently (before the virus), an old one, Ferm FBF 6E. Now looking at router tables. I've looked at various pictures including on here showing home-made router tables. What I can't understand is this: say I get a bit of ply, cut a hole in it and (somehow) fasten the...

    a whiter shade of pale

Hi chaps, I'm doing a bit of painting but struggling. The colour is one of about 20-odd shades of white that SWMBO seems to be able to distinguish between and has strong preferences about! So I'm usually painting over the same colour, when I find it difficult to tell which bits I've painted and...

    wet room floor slope wrong

Hi chaps, the house I'm in has a supposed "wet room" containing a shower, bath, sink, toilet and bidet. The shower has a glass screen at one side, I suppose because it's next to the door, but is otherwise open to the room. Problem : the shower drain isn't at the lowest point. Most shower water...

    sideways looking cameras

Hi chaps, there seem to be loads of reversing cameras out there but what I want is a camera stuck on the front looking sideways (well preferably two, one looking right and t'other looking left) sending the video to a monitor or iphone. Then I can stick the nose six inches out of the gateway and...

    door closer

Hello chaps, I'd like to get one of these door closer things you fix above the door which closes it when it would otherwise get left open (by some people!) I don't know the jargon for these things. This is just for an internal domestic door, nothing to do with fire regs or all that. I would...

    Undo plastic pipe from bidet

Hi all the waste plug in bidet is bust it’s one where you lift a rod between the taps. The waste pipe has screw fitting to the trap under the plug but I can’t get my hand in or any tool. After that there are several sections on the way out - any chance they pull apart pls?

    decking beam span

Hi chaps, out here in the sticks like many houses I've got an off-mains sewage thingy, a digester, an old one. Can just see the top of it, it looks like a World War 1 concrete machine gun post but sunk in the ground and full of you-know-what. Even with new builds around here they seem to put up...

DeWalt DC725 cordless drill sparking - brushes?

Hi chaps, I just got a new battery for this drill / driver, as per https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/cordless-drill-driver-battery.516212/ Now the drill is sparking like mad, not while running but when you let go the trigger and it stops then there's a clatter and big sparks. Is it worth...

    cordless drill / driver battery

Hi there, my DeWalt DC725(?) cordless drill driver now has 2 dead batteries. One packed up, followed a bit later by the other. What to do? Replacements are advertised around £20 plus postage. You can (or could) also buy the little internal cells and solder them together yourself, or I think the...

    gravel over gravel?

Hi all, I've got an area about 4 metres square at the side of the house but separate from it. It's got gravel on it with a membrane under that. Three and a half sides are bounded by fences and gravel boards, the last bit just has a couple of inches deep concrete lip at the same level more or...

integrated aeg fridge freezer not working well

Hi all and a happy new year to everyone. AEG integrated fridge freezer, it's in a cab I bought for the purpose from B&Q, although the rest of that part of the kitchen was put together by us. I'm pretty sure the clearances etc are fine for ventilation. 1. Not long after we got it, there was a...

    fridege freezer thermometer

Hi chaps, my fridge / freezer doesn't seem to be keeping to the right temperatures. I'm looking to buy one or possibly two (one for the fridge, one for the freezer) temperature thermometers to check on it. I don't see any point in thermometers which just show the temperature "now" - I need...
