    Architect's fees

Forgot to mention that we didn't actually go with the £4k architect  . In the end, the one we went with cost us approx £1.5k on paper, but adding together the party wall surveyors fees we had to pay because of his incomplete plans :x perhaps we could have saved ourselves a lot of stress...

    Architect's fees

Just to update anyone who may still be enquiring about architects: In the end we went for an architect who was NOT RIBA listed, but had had many many drawings approved according to the Local Authority Planning Applications weekly lists (we went back as far as we could, and hardly any for...

Dulux Realife Family Rooms paint - ok for kitchen/bathroom?

Hi all - We're looking to paint the downstairs rooms (receptions, kitchen/diner, shower room) and hall/landing in the same colour. (Don't worry, we'll be using 'accents' ) The colour we like at the mo is Natural Calico by Dulux. Are the Dulux Realife Family Rooms range of paints...

Stone resin vs stonecast shower tray?

Hi Chris - thanks for your reply. Are the stone resin trays the ones that need to be bedded onto sand and cement, or don't they need anything as they have legs? (It will be going on top of floorboards). Also are there any makes you'd recommend? TIA :)

Stone resin vs stonecast shower tray?

Hi all Need to make an urgent decision about shower tray which is due to be fitted into downstairs shower room this week  . Originally requested that builder quote for installing stonecast/cast stone shower tray, as I read that this would be more suitable for any 'heavyweights'...

    Building a shower enclosure

Many thanks, Nige F. Any ideas on the thickness required for the shower door glass, please? I've seen various thicknesses from 3mm to up to 8mm thick (I think), but which is the minimum thickness required for use with a thermo Grohtherm shower? Thanks in advance :)

    Building a shower enclosure

Not sure if this is the correct area to post this, but I'd appreciate any help/comments on the following, please: (a) Is there a recommended thickness for shower doors? The width of the shower tray will be the depth of the shower/wc room, so we won't need any side panels. We're considering...

Best location for Velux windows in pitched roof?

Our builder asked us to give an on-the-spot preference on where we wanted our two Velux windows to be fitted :? . The width of the extension is 4.5m across, and the Velux windows measure approx 760 by 1000. Our french doors (LHS) are 1800 wide and the kitchen window (RHS) is 1300 wide...

Can wall units be mounted onto a stud wall?

Hello all We're having an extension built onto our kitchen. Now, the sides of the extension (e) are approx 250mm narrower on each side than the original building (k). When finished, the kitchen will be an L-shape, with the longest wall being the original kitchen wall joining to the new...

Hanging wallpaper in hallway and landing

Hi all - Hubby and I are about to wallpaper over the stairs and in the hallway. We're quite competent, but haven't wallpapered for a while. Is there a best place to start? eg. longest drop first? Also, if we scrape off the old (slightly textured) paper very carefully, will we need to line...

    fabric screen/door for bathroom

The only thing that springs to mind, Jolly, is a heavyweight pvc-backed fabric with large eyelets, which you would put onto a metal pole. If the eyelets are correctly spaced, then you would get a similar concertina effect when the curtain is open. HTH :)

    Cleaning steam generator iron

Hi - Can anyone explain how to clean out a steam generator iron, please? I'm frequently getting brown gunge spitting out whenever I press the steam button. The model I have is the Tefal Pro Turbo Express. ISTR reading somewhere that descaling tablets/distilling (?) water shouldn't be used. The...
