    Toilet swap out

Here is a picture of our existing toilet, we've got a svp that comes out to the side, rather than out the back. Will this new toilet fit (see link) without having to move/change pipes too much? http://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/vitra-s-line-low-level-toilet-with-chrome-lever-flush.aspx...

    New toilet

I would like to change our toilet. The svp is coming in from the side so I'm guessing we would need to have a new toilet with an external cistern like it is at the moment, or if I want a concealed cistern I guess I would need to build some sort of false wall to contain it? Is this correct...

    Old fashioned door knobs

I would like to change the door knob on an old door. I have unscrewed the old knob, and screwed the new knob onto the door (outside), but I can't screw the other knob onto the door (bathroom side) because I can't screw it into the old fashioned mortice type thing, because it is metal. The old...

    Pimples under new wallpaper

I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is; 'nothing', but you never know. Yesterday I papered a brand new wall in our house, I was really pleased with it until I turned on the lamp and you can see quite a few small pimples under the paper. It is glossy paper which shows them up a bit...

    New render and frost

I have recently blocked up the front of my garage and using the info from this site along with a small amount of experience I managed to render it; Scratch coat, then top coat (sand and cement), now ready for paint. The forecast said there would be no frost last night, however when I woke...

    Painting fence panels

I need to install 3 new fence panels, I like the colour and finish shown in this picture. How would I get a finish like this? I'm sure I couldn't take any fence panel and get a good finish as the timber is rough on B&Q panels, and they have tantalise in them. I'm guessing I would need...

    Rendering an opening

I have created an opening between my garage and what was a car port. I would like to fit a secure door in the new hole, but first I must deal with the rough edges left behind after my demolition work. I have a plasterer coming round early January to render a wall for me and was thinking I...

    Door opening

I would like to create a doorway between 2 single garages. See the pic. Can I go ahead and cut an opening, I don't believe the wall is load bearing? Am I okay to use a piece of timber as a lintel as it won't be load bearing? Many thanks.

    New house, no heating

We've just moved into a new house, the heating was working fine for the first two nights, but now, nothing. As you can see by the pic, if I tap through the options for heating to; 'continuous', the boiler should fire up and the orange light should come on. But nothing. The boiler is...

    Sound proofing

I'm about to block up a doorway between kitchen and Lounge. I'm going to batten it. I'm concerned about the noise as the TV will be the other side of the opening. What should I use between the battens to sound proof it? Many thanks.

    A day's work?

I have an Artex ceiling, it's 30 sqm. I would like this skimmed. I also have a single wall that needs skimming, it's 17 sqm. If I was to labour (mix-up, sheet up, clear up) I've done it for plasterers before. Is it realistic to think these 2 jobs could be done in a day? Many thanks.

    Painting over this

All the woodwork in our house is like this, I want to paint it all white. I'm guessing; Rub down gently Primer 1 undercoat 2 top coat Rubbing down in between coats. Is that correct? Thanks.

    Blocking up

I've got a garage (with a door on it), with a car port next to it, shown here. I want to knock a doorway through the left wall of the car port so I can get access between garage and port. I then want to block up the car port, then render the front at some point. Can you help? 1/. I'm...

    Which Vauxhall Vivaro?

I need to upgrade my van and have about £8,000 to spend. I like the look of the Vauxhall Vivaro. I'm a landscaper so need to carry a cement mixer and a few heavy tools, nothing major. In time, I hope to get myself a trailer to pull 1Tonne of sand/soil. Due to the potential trailer do I...

    Sleepers on concrete

I've got some mini sleepers; 1200 long, 150 wide. I want to run a line of them (just one high) along my concrete drive as an edging. Can I lay a bed of ballast, say 15mm deep (using 10mm stones) and just sit the timber sleeper on top of it? Many thanks.

    No whacker plate

I am putting a few slabs down for a bench/seating area; 2m x 2m.. I have dug the footings and shovelled in a good layer of Mot Type 1. The recent rain appears to have firmed the type 1. Do I really need to hire a whacker plate (£30), or will stamping on the type 1 be good enough? Thanks.

    Vauxhall Combo and a trailer

I have a Combo van with a 1200 engine. I really need to pull a trailer on the odd occasion, with sand or rubble up to 2 Tonnes. Will my van manage it? Is it legal even? Many thanks

    Decking; deck screws or nails

I've been given 2 quotes for a small deck to be built round our back. One guy said he will use deck screws to fix the deck boards, the other will use a nail gun. The nail gun man is a bit cheaper. I'm not sure if I'm better off paying a bit more to have the guy use screws, but I can't...
