    Mira Sport

We have a Mira Sport electric shower (the biggest model I think...the one that dims the lights when switched on). We also have shared water pipes through next door. When they turn their water on, our pressure drops, and if you are in the shower it turns bl**dy red hot in a second i.e...

    Tiling around socket

I'm tiling the mother in laws kitchen!!! Only two tiles left to do, around a double socket (plastic types) on the wall. The socket sits right on the join of both tiles (if that makes sense). Question is, do I: a) cut out a rectangular section of both tiles, so that the socket sits...

    shared water supply

We have a semi detached cottage dating from approx 1850. The water supply is shared, as it comes in through the neighbours house. No problems, but when they run their water, our pressure drops, and our electric shower suddenly goes red -hot. Is it possible for a plumber to re-route the...

    THANKS Kevplumb, BAHCO and Johndug

Big thanks to Kevplumb, BAHCO and Johndug for comments back early January about 'Kettling'. I eventually tracked it down (with their comments) to a faulty pump. I've replaced this (again with gratitude for their comments) and the problem seems to have gone. Cheers.

I hope to replace an old Myson Compact CP53 water pump, with a new one (just bought it). Usual old central heating system, primatic cylinder, gas fired boiler, etc. There are 2 isolation valves, one each side of the pump. I would like help with three questions if possible: 1) how do I know...

    Central Heating "Kettling"

We have a Myson Economist gas fired boiler running a central heating system, with 6 radiators. There is a primatic cylinder in the system. It is all about 15-20 years old, but it's been serviced regularly. It worked well until about 18 months ago, when we had a radiator moved (only a few...

    stains above!!

We have an old tongue and groove ceiling in the kitchen. As its been stained and varnished a dark brown, we want to lighten it up. Someone has said that if we just paint over, even with undercoat first, the varnish/stain will eventually discolour the paint. The wood has a bit of profile, so...

    Brass light switches

We are replacing switches that have white plastic faceplates for ones with brass faceplates. At present the earth wire goes to the metal box in the wall, I'm assuming because you can't earth onto plastic. However, the brass plates have an earth attachment. So, I need to know........... ...

    anti fungal

Is there an antifungal treatment we can temporarily use on mould, where damp has marked the wallpaper. Although we will be fixing the problem of the damp, it may be a little while. In the meantime, I need/want to treat and clean the mould inside, to stop it spreading further. Any suggestions...

    3 way dimmers

We want to replace a wall switch, contolling 3 switches (is this called a 3 gang?) with dimmer switches. 2 of the switches are 2 way (i.e. controlled on 2 walls) and 1 is one way (just the one switch for the light). Firstly, can anyone let me know where I can get a 3 way dimmer, as they are...

    water from stone!!!!

We have an old stone built house, circa1900. The gable end appears to be letting the rain through, and the room inside is showing damp. We've had the coping stones repointed on the roof, to stop leaking down, but no joy. Any hints on how to stop it. Could the stones be porous, ad can they be...

    Selecting a shower

We have a primatic cylinder (see below!!!!) and have been told that we cannot have a shower that needs a pump, as this could affect the water bubble inside the cylinder. I assume this means a power shower, that runs off the cylinder hot water. Does anyone know if it would be okay to have an...

    Primatic Cylinder

Can anybody explain what a primatic cylinder is, and more importantly how it works. We have a gas fired central heating system, running with 1 header tank (not the usual 2)and an open system into a 'Primatic Cylinder'. Its proving very difficult finding out how the cylinder works. I know that...

    Fireplace

We have taken out a coal fire, to reveal the large (original) builders stone opening, prior to fitting a multi-fuel stove. Just a few questions, to help us proceed. Firstly, what is the best way to clean soot from the stone (some are badly stained). Secondly, where can you buy limestone...
