    Future Electricity Costs

A couple of recent design projects have brought this into focus. One is a manor house with very poor insulation and no prospect of upgrading due to listing control. The existing heating is dead as a doornail. Clients wanted a heat pump but the numbers don't add up. This place is big and the unit...

    Energy monitoring.

I had smart meters fitted a while back. Purely for convenience because access to the meters is not so good after a porch, but I did also think that monitoring energy would be a bonus. Well, it wasn't, not really, the monitor unit doesn't respond quick enough to switching things on and off and...

    Energy Bill Subsidy

Received a letter from British Gas informing us the subsidy will be paid over 6 months from October to March at a rate of £67/month. In other words will be deducted from our bill. We don't have to do anything - it will just happen.

    Interesting Fact

The population of London peaked in 1939 and did not get back to the same level until 2015. Quite amazing.

What have you turned off to save energy?

I cancelled all the timed heating a while back. We now just switch it on if/when we need it, which obviously isn't a lot at the mo. I also reduced the hot water to 20 mins a day. I thought I would start low and ramp it up 5 mins at a time if we ran out of hot water - but we haven't yet. Three of...

'Appalling' spate of arson attacks damages up to 25 vehicles - BBC News I'm struggling to work out what is going on here. These fires are in my local area so big news this morning. The local reports are up to 40 cars and vans were torched through the early hours this morning. In car parks, on...

    Water Meter Water Leak

Got a water bill for seven hundred odd quid last week so worked out our usage and decided to go onto a water meter. Meter was fitted Monday and I noticed it was turning with no water on. Turns out I've got a leak - about 60 litres/hour. On it's own the leak will cost me sixteen hundred quid a...

    Super Immunity Anyone?

This study says that if you contract covid following 2 doses of vaccine you gain a massive boost in antibodies - which is described as being like a super-immunity. It only works that way around though. You don't get the immunity boost if you have covid and then vaccine. Maybe the vaccinated...

    EV Charging Advice

I am in the middle of building a porch on the front of the house and now would be a good time to put in a cable for a future EV charging point. I may or may not get it connected myself but reckon it might be a good selling point later. I am looking at three core 6mm² Doncaster EV-Ultra...

Electric Car Charging Gov to Invest £Billions

UK Construction Week - News (constructionbuzz.co.uk) Who drives electric? More and more electric vans, buses and even lorries around these days, which is all good. I'm thinking of electric next March, but how do you cope with the 500 mile round trip? That's a couple of stops of an hour or two...

    Staining or Tinting Concrete

Can anybody recommend a product to colour or tint concrete. I am looking for something more like a stain that is absorbed rather than a paint that sits on the surface, and preferably something I can go and pick up off the shelf at a local shed. Ta. PS, I understand that different concretes...

Is there any point to this forum any more?

The GD forum was never a perfect place but there used to be some interesting threads and conversations across a fairly wide range of subjects. Some were controversial, some went to epic proportions and certainly the odd insult was offered, but on the whole it was kept reasonably civil. All that...

    European Referendum

Will we get a vote after all? What's the process, does it need a commons vote on a referendum or can Cameron just bring it forward? Personally I don't believe we'll leave because I can't see Merkel letting us walk away and leave Germany on its own - as the only contributor I mean! I think she'll...

    Assault

To be honest I don't give a toss about this either way but I can't help wondering why this woman hasn't been sacked and why the police have not been involved. In the Clarkson fiasco the outrage at somebody punching somebody in the workplace was almost universal and apparently 'you just cannot do...
