    sealed unit replacement dimension

HI I need to replace a blown unit so I've taken it out and measured it at 27mm depth. Replacements are available in increments of 2mm. Do I go for 26mm or 28mm? Thanks for reading

    Is this a stopcock?

A friend lives in a cottage in Dumfries and wants to isolate his water supply. Removing the lid of the access chamber reveals this bit of kit. I had expected a valve of some sort but have no idea what this is or how to operate it. Anyone know how it works?

    heater fan- blow or suck?!!

I recently switched the heater blower on my 05 plate Touran and now nothing comes out of any of the outlet vents regardless of the selector position. Curiously though, when I open the re-circulation inlet the cold air blasts out. It is as though the fan is working in reverse!! Any one any...

    Touran trim screws and bolts

Hi there I'm restoring a 2005 VW Touran and need to replace the screws that hold wheel arch liners and so on. They are torx 25-30 and have a broad self-tapper sort of thread. So I need to know where to get them and it would be helpful to know what to call them as a start:) I know I will need to...

car radio switches off and on

My car radio switches off- and back on- seemingly randomly. At first I thought it was a dodgy power connection but all the cables are fine. And if when it goes off I press the on button it comes back on again. At the moment I drive along pressing the on button every so often! And that can be 3...

open vent system expansion pipe configuration

I am re-siting my boiler and the existing expansion pipe is no longer directly vertical above the flow and pump . What is the minimum vertical length of pipe I can get away with before a horizontal section to connect with the existing vertical pipe?

CH boiler replacement . System or open vent?

I'm planning on upgrading my CH boiler, currently an open vent set-up with header tank etc. I don't want a combi but a sealed system seems simpler, an obvious choice. Why would I bother with a header tank if I don't have to? Is there any advantage of header tank /open vent set-ups or are they...

    welding sills

my 55 plate Mondeo has a lot of corrosion. But I am very fond of it. What kind of job is getting sills welded? It was routine with Cortinas in my youth!:)

    How do pop-up plugs fail?

How do pop-up plugs fail? And more to the point. what can be done? :) Using my bath to store water ( water works in the street and supply cut off) I discovered the plug allows a slow drain. No big worry, I shower rather than bath anyway. But now my basin plug won't click down! Can anything be...

central heating pump over run MTVs close

My (old) Potterton boiler has an off delay for the pump. When the MTV switch lives click off a permanent live allows the pump to continue for a short while to dissipate excess heat. But what I don't get is this; What is the point of running the pump if both MTVs are closed, effectively...

    welding exhaust?

I have a 55 plate V6 Mondeo estate which has been a faithful servant for many years. However, the flexible pipe which connects the manifolds to the catalytic converter has cracked and my garage cannot source a replacement. Apart from being old there are not many 3 litres V6s about! Common sense...

change clear glass window to frosted glass?

I am converting a utility room into a second bathroom The window frame is in perfect condition and doesn't need altering so I don't want to rip out the whole window . Is changing the sealed unit the simplest most cost effective route? (I assume I can't treat the existing glass in some way?!) Thanks

    sticking plasterboard to concrete lintol

While I was removing tiles from round a bathroom window , the old plaster on the concrete lintol fell off too. If I use some sort of "dabs" technique to stick plasterboard to the lintol will it be strong enough to take the weight of the tile? Would something like Pink Stuff or Grip Fill do the job?

Reinstating render and/or plaster after tile removal

I am going to have to hack tile from a bathroom wall and cause extensive damage to the render- they seem to be fixed with sand and cement rather that tile adhesive. Will I need to re-render the wall or would, say, one-coat plaster do the job?

    Hardiebacker and rawlplugs?

Having discovered that removing wall tiles is indeed a nightmare, I am now wondering if I can screw hardiebacker board to the wall- say 70mm screws through the tile and into the wall behind- and tile that. Any reason why that wouldn't work?

    tile removal nightmare!

Can anyone advise?! I have started removing tiles from an old bathroom. I have no idea what was used to stick them with but it seems like concrete! No matter what I do the tiles break into tiny pieces which only come off with quantities of the plaster. And every tile is a battle! The bond of...

clay to pvc flexible adaptor sizes

I'm fitting an inspection chamber into an existing "old" clay drain. I bought two flexible adaptors ( screwfix) which are marked as adapting 110mm to 122-136. Being a timid soul, I measured the circumference of the existing glazed clay pipe , before cutting it. The circumference is 440mm which I...

    kingspan adhesive

Hi I am using Thermaroof 127 to insulate my extension ( warm ) roof. I will be nailing the vapour barrier and then want to use adhesive to fix 120mm TR27 to that, followed by 50mm TR27 to that, and then 9.5mm OSB to take a fibreglass top surface. I have looked at the on-line installation...
