A quick background. Both microwaves were identical bought approx 17 years ago (Boyfriend bought one soon after I did and we ended up having 2 when we moved in together).

Both have had a similar amount of use but one was living in our bedroom and only had occasional use over the last few years.

Anyway one went boom yesterday, so we got down the spare and it seemed fine cooking dinner last night. I was making porridge this morning and the exact same thing happened!

Can this be a coincidence? It couldn't possibly be the socket itself could it?

Just coincidence at this time, Amanda......if you plug a lamp into the socket, is all well - no flickering or whatever?

Hello Burnerman, yes, just did a test and a lamp and it works fine in the same socket. No flickering at all

    Hello Big-all,

    Yes they do.

Just tried the second microwave for 30 seconds to see what the state of play with it is. It seems to make all the right noises, no crackling, the light is on and the turntable goes round but it no longer heats. Looks like something has fried in it!

Just seems odd that exactly the same thing happened with 2 microwaves in a row! A crackle, a pop, then smoke! And no, there was no metal inside while I was using them.

i was wondering if the plug fuses where underrated a bit and the voltage was up fluctuating a bit and blowing the fuse but as the lights still work its not that
