3 way lighting

It is my intention to fit three-way lighting in my hallway.
I thought I could do this by utilising 3x two-way switches. However, looking at my bible it shows 2x two-way switches with an 'intermediate' switch between them.

Do I have to buy one of these intermediate switches or is there a way round it with a two-way switch?
