I'm looking to install around 40m of 6 inch gaspipe, and then 4 spurs off of it of around 100m each of 4inch gaspipe. Each spur will be feeding 8 gas heaters.

Im not Corgi registered, i am however a competant pipe fitter, with over 4 years experience (business partner has been doing air/oil pipe fitting for over 30 years).

I'll be looking at buying the pipe in 6 metre sections pre assembled with flanges (or paying someone to visit site to do the welding).

I'll be installing all of the big pipe work, and the mechanical and electrical installation of the gas heater.

I will then be looking to use a Corgi registered gas person to do the final connections to the heaters, and to purge the system and run all the checks.

Is this ok to do, or would i need a Corgi registered person installing all of the pipe work with me?

this must be some kind of joke... who do you plan on gettin to put their name next to your disaster with lives lost (er... i mean your pipework)?

Why don't you use plastic pipe. It's much easier to cut and join. ;)

Care to elaborate rather than unhelpful criticism?

Like i said, we would install it, and we would then have it fully tested, purged etc by a Corgi registered gas fitter.

Em  I think I worked that out, but thanks for mantioning it

I just don't think you realise what is involved or what your lettiing yourself in for.

If you want to discuss it off-line then send me an email.

Will do, thanks

I was asked to do some work in the local Town Hall.

This involved a lot os screwed steel mostly 2". I called a couple of localish firms specialising in screwed steel.

A very small part was say 1" screwed steel gas pipe. I asked if they would do that part under my supervision on the basis that I would be responsible for testing it.

Firstly I was surprised that they were not CORGI registered anyway but they refused to do the gas pipe anyway.

My understanding is that the 4" pipework COULD be done by a competent fitter but unly under the direct and continuous supervision of a commercial CORGI ( me ) who holds the pipe unit ( not me ).

Yeah that was the way i see it. Weve done 4 inch galv steel pipework before for compressed air, and a whole host of sizes smaller than that.

The actual fitting of it we have got no problems with - we know it wont leak, we know we can install it safely, the only thing we dont know was how a Corgi fitter would view it. with regards to testing etc

Cannot imagine you lifting a length of 4" steel Tony

The sections will have to be welded, flanged preferably for ease of handling and cost.

Stubbings can be fabricated prior to installion.

The volume of the pipe, on the above sizes, is 4.37 m³. therefore the installation will need to be seperated into at least 5 sections, in order to keep the volume for purging below 1 m³.

Send Water Systems to do it, he reckons he's competent (enough). ;)
