Could someone advise best products/practice to make good channels/sockets etc after wiring new sockets in kitchen? Some of the 'holes' are v. deep whereas others are shallow so not sure if I could use plaster throughout.

Use bonding plaster to fill holes and bring level up to about 2mm from flat surface then multifinish plaster. Make sure you pva all the areas.

If you're doing it in your own house, I would use sand and cement mix behind and around the backbox. To my mind this gives a stronger and denser fixing, and as it takes a long time to set, you can fill the void thoroughly. Afterwards, plaster up the front, and scrape it flat with a broad-bladed decorators knife when solid but not fully hard and dry.

This does take rather longer than just plaster, as you have to allow the mortar a day to set. So if you were doing it for a living, where time is money, it might not be quick enough for you.

Good point John just make sure you do not get the cement on the cables as it eats them for breakfast.

Thanks for that - not doing it for a living, just to make the room more 'liveable'?!!
Just to clarify, mortar ok for the deep holes around back box but not near cabling, then bonding (ok over cabling) to 2mm from surface then multi-finish. Is there an all-in-one that would be a suitable alternative to the 2 plasters?
PVA ratio? 3:1 or 5:1 (water:pVA?)
