Advice/tips on crimping cables

yes, you will notice the ones for insulated crimps have the red/blue/yellow matks at the appropriate tooth.

I think yours are for bootlace crimps or ferrules


the CK one is much better than most brands. Avoid Silverline as it is rubbish.

Indeed. A neighbour of mine got a pair of those from TLC a while ago and, after having tried to use them, asked me 'what he was doing wrong'. When I tried, I found it even more difficult than usual to get anything like a satisfactory joint - so the nearest I could get to telling him 'what he had done wrong' was to suggest that he'd purchased an unsatisfactory tool!
