Recently there has been a lot in the news regarding UK's 'irresponsible' drinking culture in our society today - 24hr drinking - Charles Kennedy - Liver Disease etc....
Is it no wonder that as generations are brought up, to think that "socialising" every day in a pub is the norm?

Take last night's television for example, before the waterhsed 'kiddy viewing' ( Emerdale - Woolpack/Corronation St - Rovers/Eastenders - Queen Vic) every soap, which they are a "British Institution" or so we are led to believe, centers life around the pub and even condones under-age drinking - e.g. Stacy (17) Eastenders loosing the plot whilst drinking in a house party!

I think the television producers have a lot to answer for with regards to the state of our society today.
Surely the story writers could come up with some other situation where people interact, without the need to resort to "lets have another scene (in a pub/house) where people get drunk and fall out with each other".... but then again isn't that what Britiah people do anyway? and lets remember these programmes get aired all over Europe/the World.

It does not surprise me one little bit, that this is the view and opinion of other nations to our culture.

Please don't get me wrong I do enjoy occasional jaunts to the local and have a drink but, in modreation and not every day ;)

100% agreed with you, regarding the TV soap programmes which is cheap and nasty entertaining. All you see is people having affairs, drinks, guns & voilence in which the youngsters will think it's normal way of life. They are sending out the wrong messages because the scriptwriter are running out of idea of storyline.

As a non british born citizen, I was very very surprised when I first moved here and asked my mate what he did for relaxing etc. Answer - get ****ed. I had only drank 3 times before in my life now it was every friday and sat night! And the amount of times people argue and fight because they can't handle their alcohol. Just last week a lad got followed home by 2 other guys from the pub - they bottled him in the face and put his head through a window! My guess is if they were sober or even less ****ed they would have been more relaxed? It was 3 in the morning! I don't believe the extended license will stop binge drinking idiots!

I cannot understand why people think that the UK is unique in it's drink culture.

Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Russia, USA, Mexico, Poland and most other Eastern European states drink in ways similar to the culture in the UK, perhaps not to the same extent that it is in the UK for local cultural reasons, but we are certainly not unique.

Not a British soap, but just as popular nonetheless: Neighbours.

On Neighbours they only drink halves and seldom finish them, and spend more time in "the coffee shop". So surely that is teaching the youth a "cafe culture"?

(According to my mate who lived in Oz, people do seem to drink halves more than they drink pints, because of the heat... bunch of sheilas ;) )

binge drinking ..

try watching them teens on Skys Booze Nation on bravo.....

soaps dont encourage people to drink....its just natural to show real life an thats drinking
