Anyone got any experience of dealing with corrosion on a coach-bulit aluminium body? We have a van with an all alloy body, unfortunately it has spent much of its life in a salt spray environment and there are signs of bubbling around the rivet heads, underneath the paintwork. I want to clean this up prior to respraying the entire vehicle. Other than mechanically stripping back with a softish wire brush then cutting back with an abrasive, is there any better way to sort this out?

Id imagine DA it all over, strip back the ally corner beads with maybe a powered soft wire brush followed by hand sheets, then reprime......

DA is a type of sander which rotates both backwards and forwards (oscilates)at high speed. They more usually(but not always) work of a compressor and are used in bodyshops etc. DA= Dual Action.

Whilst they are quicker and leave a better finished any sander will do followed by Hitachimad's advice.

You really need an etching primer on ally first otherwise the paint may not adhere very well.

Ah - what we joiner types call (incorrectly) a random orbit sander or ROS. My old man used to refer to them as "jitterbug" sanders....
