Just had a plumber look at my heating/water system. In the hot water tank cupboard, behind the motorised valve, I have a pipe with a large screw on top - This acts as an air release valve. The plumber said that "automatic air release valves" are now being used to replace them. He suggests replacing the old turning screw with one of these new valves.

Anyone know anything about these?

Is this a good idea?

View media item 35609 AAV's are commonly used on CH systems. Poor quality ones are more trouble than they're worth. If your existing manual vent is working OK then it's not worth changing it. Is your system suffering from air problems?

I agree completely with that. AAVs are notorious for leaking especially on dirty old systems.

Unless you system has problems then it only needs any air releasing once or twice a year.

Easier to keep the existing.
