I recently installed a ballcock into a property as the previous one was not closing off properly. Thought i had solved the problem until i received a call saying ballcock is constantly running ( more than a trickle.)

After shutting the valve down which feeds the hot water cylinder the ballcock fills the f&e then closes off. When i open the valve back up for the hot water feed into the cylinder, water comes out of the open safety vent into the f&e for a few seconds then stops.

The ballcock then resumes it constant steady running ( no more water comes out of the safety vent and nothing calling for water).

I have checked the whole house for leaks and none found. With the amount of water running constantly into the f&e a leak would have become apparent very quickly anyway.

The water into the f&e must be going somewhere. Any ideas?

Cheers for the response. Being a bit thick here. Why would the water keep running from the f&e constantly. have checked the central heating f&e and all seems quiet there.

Do any of the pipes to hot taps go under concrete or floor boards downstairs

Yes pipes do go under boards, however have checked these. (Including taking kick boards off in kitchen) None go through concerete. 99.9% sure there is no leak from hot water pipes even though my logic is telling me there must be. With the amount of water running into the f&e it would have to be a pretty substantial leak.

didn't understand that. Do you mean there are two F&E? If one's for the central heating, what's the other one for?

Any chance of some pics?

If you shut off both the bal lco cks, what gets empty?

Two in the loft. normal set up - small for central heating. All looks normal so for moment have rulled this out as not loosing or gaining water.

Large for cold feed to bathroom and hot feed into cylinder. If valve is shut off before ballcock water keeps draining.

Have tried a bit of problem solving -If i leave the valve open by ballcock so water can enter and shut of hot feed into hot water cylinder the f&e fills and ballcock shuts off. this tells me it must be something to do with the hot feed. Im running out of ideas!

Tells you that you have a leak somewhere

from previous post answer you did not make it clear whether you have hot pipes in concrete floors?

OK. The small one is F&E for the Central Heating. The large one is not an F&E, it is a cold water cistern.

Which is the one that is running? Is it higher or lower than the other one?

How sure are you that none of the WC cisterns is overflowing?

Is there a shower mixer?

So which one has the running ballcock? And when you shut off the supply, does the level drop in the large one, the small one, or both?

Cold water cistern running. central heating f&e fine as previously stated.
No WC cisterns overflowing.
Already checked the power shower.

have since found out there is a hot feed under the concrete floor into the utility. My guess is there is a leak under there!

No other reasonable explaination.

Forgot to ask. Does anyone know if there is some specialist equipment for detecting where a leak is under concrete?
