WE would like to install a shower and sink and toilet in our basement, but our plumbing is overhead. Is there a way to drain a shower upwards?

No, since gravity dictates it, but are you sure you are lower (in the basement) than the sewers? if not it will have to be pumped,
you want a thing called a macerator, goes on the back of a toilet chops up the **** and pumps it up a pipe, i have found a website that tells you about them but check out your local builders merchants for one / better price

the url is http://www.vortoplast.co.uk/
