Help,

I have just had a new consumer unit fitted and every time I throw the fused isolating switch to connect the boiler, pump, timer etc to the supply, the RCD in the consumer unit trips. When the boiler was supplied by the old consumer unit (without RCD protection), there was not a problem and system worked perfectly. Any ideas? Thanks.

Part of the heating system has an earth fault, or a borrowed neutral from another circuit. More likely the former - water has probably managed to work its way into a part of the boiler or pump where it shouldn't be. A good start would be to disconnect individual parts of the system and work out exactly what you can and can't run without causing the RCD to trip. Remember not to run the boiler for more than a few seconds without the pump connected.

Just because a fault didn't show up before RCD protection was added, does not mean that the fault didn't exist.
