You’re still not at the builders opening which will look a nice feature with a little work.

Yes, I stopped at that yesterday as I didn't want to finish too late, plus the tidying up....Rugby and beer was waiting for me.

There is still more to do I realise but I didn't get it all done in the one day.

The deep metal casing was the ash pan. It will have a dcut to outside for combustion air. If there was a gas fire fitted, it is a requirement to seal off the draught.

I see, yes there was a gas fire there some time ago. I got rid of the gas pipe years ago.

There is an asbestos pipe under the floor which is venting. With that ashpan removed from the the ashpit box, the draught seems to work ok.

I'm wondering if when I'm done if it's worth seeking advice from a specialist about what I'd need to do if I did want to make it a useable open fire. I probably wouldn't use it, but as a feature for us but an asset for if we sold the house to say that it is useable.

Yes I looked some time ago to try and work out what parts were missing. The grate I can see went a long time ago.

Also some time ago in the back garden I found a rod when digging for the footings for our extension. Had no idea what it was for, but when looking at the spares it appears to be the rod for the damper.

Morning all.

Just after some advice on how to proceeed with opening to the builders opening. As you'll see from the photos I have begun to expose the opening. However, my question now relates to the inside of the opening and the chimney. If I remove the brickwork to the back of the fireplace, there will be nothing above the rear of the chimney.

How would I be best to proceed? Hopefully my photos and description is clear enough.

I'm wondering if the next stages are worthy of a seperate thread in the building section of the forum?
