Hi everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to help me with this one.

(please see attached pic).

I'm laying some vinyl flooring down and the floor boards it's going down onto have a lot of tile cement and general crud!

Any suggestions on how to create the perfect surface for the vinyl flooring would be greatly appreciated?

Sanding? Filling gaps? Exposed nail heads?

Thanks people!

Ben

Ive just done the same. I would scrape off the worst of the old adhesive with a big scraper (Screwfix do a decent one). Lay ply boards screwed down at 15cm intervals. I chose 6mm because the floorboards themselves were reasonably level and I didn’t want to raise the floor level any more than that.

Make sure you go for screws the right size when securing the ply I.e ones that won’t hit any pipes that may be below. I went for 20mm just to be on the safe side.

I then skim coated the whole lot using karndean skim coat but I believe ardex do one as well that may prove more cost effective for larger areas, to cover the joins and screw heads. Here’s the photos of what I did if it helps.

Same here, though I added a sheet of 2mm foam on top of the floorboards, with 6mm ply on top. I used ring-shank nails, 8 inch spacing, quicker than screws.

Nice tips mate I like the idea of the foam to add a more forgiving surface...cheers mate.
