Hello.

My house has too many front doors, so I've decided to brick one up. My question is: would it be a good idea to excavate the existing concrete sill that sits across the botom of the aperture, or can I just level it with mortar and put the first row of bricks straight on top? Also, can I presume that the original DPC goes along under the door sill? Or should I take extra precautions against rising damp?

I know these are probably daft questions, but I'm a rank amateur!

PS The house is a 1930's semi.

Its unlikely that there is a dpc under the cill, so lay a new one on top of it.

You can leave the cill in-situ if you don't mind seeing it

just brick it on the inside and put a sign on the outside saying "Witnesses Welcome" :p

Ha! When I've finished fixing this money-pit of a house I've bought, I'm going to have myself certified. Then I can spend the rest of my days in a nice warm padded room, being fed liquid food by sympathetic nurses AND NEVER SEE ANOTHER BRICK EVER AGAIN.
