I'm in the process of switching to British Gas from Octopus for Gas + Elec. It was one of the cheapest deals from a comparison site.

I got an email from BG saying that HomeCare is included for free as part of the deal! Seems too good to be true. Anyone familiar with this? Do you really get free boiler service and insurance?

A years "insurance" for free cannot be bad. You won't get a service, but if you need it, then a quick response is readily available, and £90 is not extortionate. It is probably tied in with a cheap tariff, so you ain't really losing. Just remember to cancel before automatic renewal if you don't want it.

BG’s definition of a service is somewhat lacking anyway, so you really aren’t missing anything on that front.

The important bit is that it renews automatically after the first year, and the renewal isn't free.

They are assuming (correctly) that a large number of customers won't remember to cancel, so they will get a load of extra paying customers from the second year onwards.

yes, you're right... it auto renews and then you pay through the nose! So, I must set a reminder to cancel with 30 days notice
