Buying land and building abroad?

Hi all,

anyone got any experience with buying land in say, France with a view to building on it?
Been looking at empty plots to get planning permission or plots with rundown buildings that need either renovating or pulling down and rebuilding.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice.

Questions in my mind, are....
Is legislation a nightmare over there?
Is it cheap to build in France? Who to use, UK contractors or French?
etc etc.

Any advice would be most appreciated, thanks.
