I have read somewhere that you should wax hand saws and other tools to stop them rusting. What sort of wax should I use?

you can use WD40.
Or other oil if you prefer.
However, when you have finished wih the rag, wet it with water and put it in a plastic bag. If screwed up, rags with oil on them can self-ignite
I have seen it happen, I once sniffed one out in an unattended painter's cupboard.
