Ceiling Rose Fixtures.

Why are old type ceiling roses so deep and large, when all they ever contained was a live and neutral 3/.029'' cable and cotton covered twin twisted 3/.029'' flex and NO earth, whilst the modern counterpart is so flat in shape, yet has to house up to ten cables with earths in, and the thicker double insulated lighting flex - leaving hardly any room to work in?
