hey all

anyone know how to clean enamel - we've got an antique enamelled log burner (and very nice it is too) but it's got what looks like stains on it it's like something has entered the enamel and bleached away some of the colour - if you wipe over it with water it goes back to the original colour but once it's dried the 'stain' re-appears?

any ideas - i thought about oil(s) but wasn't sure what type(s) plus pretty soon it'll be in use again

Have you tried toothpaste, T-Cut or similar with 000 gauge wire wool. Enamel is tough stuff so the abrasive goo shouldn't affect the finish and if the stain is on the surface it should be able to cut through it. Try the technique on the back or somewhere out of sight first though.

If the stain is under the glaze then you will have to live with it as 'character'. re-enameling cast iron is not really viable.
