We seem to have combined flow/return valves on our radiators, as described by Ant on 13th May. This raises the questions: how would the system be balanced, in the absence of a lockshield valve?; and - how do we remove a radiator? - would we need to drain the system? We are considering removing a downstairs radiator on suspicion of sludge, since this one will only heat up if all others in the rest of the house are turned off.

This is the quote from Ant - in the "removing a radiator" topic which commenced on 09-Jan-03 :-

"Are there two pipes feeding the rad? If so there will either be one at each end or two at one end going to a combined flow/return valve. The combined valves usually have a tube going from the valve body to the other end of the rad inside the rad - this was to help disperse water across the rad - rather than flowing straight back down the return pipe and not heating the rad."

Also, should have mentioned that all radiators in the house were working fine last winter.

The pump is noisy as well. Tried bleeding it, but no air came out.
