Confusion over choice of forum

There's been a lot of effort recently by the moderators and others to encourage correct posting of messages, but I'm often confused.

For example, I have a query about fitting a cooker hood in a kitchen which requires extract ducting to be installed, either through a wall or through the roof. Do I post on "Electrics UK", "Appliances", "Building", "Roofing", or "General"?

My immediate reaction is to post on "General", since my query covers several trades, but if the thread develops to discuss the ducting going out through the roof, then the moderators might object and say "should be in roofing".

Please could the moderators (or others) provide a bit of guidance on the criteria for choosing the correct forum?
