Does anyone know where I can get M6 10mm long cross dowels I have been looking all over the net but 12mm is the shortest I can find, which I already have and are too long

Failing finding any of the required length you need to find someone with a lathe to turn 1mm off each end. How many are you talking about
I am thinking the same I bought some 12mm hoping they would work 10mm seem non existent I only need 2
Just need someone with a lathe or a grinder for a more rough and ready bodge
Will 6mm x 10mm units work OK in 10mm board. You only have a maximum of 2mm wall thickness in the wood, assuming a 6mm bolt hole. You might well find the board edges break out when you tighten the bolts.
I think 6mm will be too short as you say may put too much pressure on the edges
