    I don't know Derby, but I'd certainly expect a 1932 house to have a dpc. Look where I suggested.

    if it is slate, it won't have "worn out" but it might be bridged, and there might be a leak or something above it.

    Getting a salts test done will give you a lot of information to go on and help narrow down the cause - they are relatively inexpensive.
