what is the difference between a gate valve, stop cock, isolater valve, ball valve, service valve and bib cock.

why are gate valves used at the main water tank and a stop cock on the riser main is there a reason for this.

a gate valve for gravity fed water ..its full bore..not made really for mains pressure due to design
stop me old cock for mains pressure pipes..rubber washer inside.
isolator, service, ballofix ? etc....for servicing purposes..u put them on either mains or gravity and isolate 1 part..ie taps, feed to tank, etc
ball valve is a valve (tap) that works by the ball floating in the water...it rises with the level of the water and closes the valve as it does so
bib cock...mainly for outside taps....with check valves or without.
re gate valves at the cistern...its cos they are full bore and do not negate flow
